Hi all.

A friend and I are trying to list all of the areas of Nent containing bad air.
If anyone has come across any previously, could you please let me know?
I know about the back end or Rampgill, parts of Rampgill Firestone, Inbye Caplecleugh High Level, and part of the Low Level.
Anywhere else?

Thanks.

Leif.

Better add Guddamgill Level beyond the 'orange bath' duck. Drops off steadily from there inbye. Meter alarm - 16% minimum in reasonably high pressure.

Also climb into Guddamgill Vein stopes from Brownley Hill - drops down to about 17.5% at climb. CO2??

Burtree Pasture Mine - going away from entry shaft on levels air gets much worse. Meter alarm - minimum recorded 15.5%

Hope this is of some help

Alan

PS No major falls found this week

Alan -

Super relieved you didn’t discover any “presents” for the diggers.
It was becoming much too frequent an occurrence! ;-)

Not Nenthead but beware of Marlbeck main drive far in. When you get to see wooden stemples one more step and you will see green fairies.

Cheers Roy, it’s still a help.
We may move onto mines further afield at a later date.

Only places that I personally recall ever feeling it are the dead-end of Waterblast Flat in Smallcleugh.

I think if you go the opposite way to the round-trip continuation from Brownley High Level when you drop down the rope into Jug Vein.

Also the shaley bit of Rampgill Firestone where you're above Rampgill Sun Vein.

Not that i've been to any of the above in the last 5 years, so could all have changed.

Cheers Chris.

I’ll stick them on the list.
Planning on getting to each of these places to get a detector reading.

I know Rampgill Firestone all too well. Seems like I’m in there every other week...

Another area is the adits around Allenheads mine dressing yard. Mike luff and I were investigating one of the adits in this area hit bad air! As the aim of the exploration was to look for areas where the air was bad for the British Steel Management we slowly made our way out and told the foreman what we had discovered.

Started checking some of the mentioned areas last weekend.

Anyone else know of any areas not already mentioned?

Rampgill - up Scaleburn Vein to junction with Scaleburn Cross Vein. There is a sub-level chamber here. I went down into it a few years ago. It stinks of Hydrogen Sulphide or sulphure dioxide. Got out quickly! Dave B.

I’d overlooked that.

Thanks.

Brewery Shaft, that reminds me Wellgill shaft bottom upstream to deep water, about 650m 16.4% and often smelling hydrogen sulphide along the way.
