The most definitive account I have come across of the more recent explorations here is that by Mel Davies in South Wales Caving Club Newsletter No.69 p. 18-20.
This shows more extensive accessible workings than the sketch included here.
This account states "An underground survey of the Lefel Cadno has been now been started by Cwmbran[Caving Club] members, organised by Dick Keen under the aegis of the Department of Industry, National Museum of Wales"
Does anyone know if this was completed, & if so if there is a copy anywhere?
I seem to remember meeting Richard at the NMW many years ago.

Dick Keen started many projects but completed very few. He left no neat or organsied body of field notes or manuscript material when he left NMW, although it is possiblke that he retained some material on a personal basis. NMW does not hold a survey of Nantymwyn I'm afraid. Feel free to pm me if you wish to discuss futher.

Simon Hughes's account in BM45 usefully summarised SWCC's work - Simon had the advantage of having liaised with the late Bruce Foster, leader of the SWCC efforts.

Thanks for posting that link.

On reading the article, it would probably be worth contacting both SWCC and Cwmbran CC to see what each club might have in the way of unpublished surveys, log books, and in the case of Cwmbran, whether their club newsletter published any articles on the mine.

I don't recall seeing anything on Nantymwyn in the SWCC library, other than this newsletter article and the Simon Hughes British Mining article, which, incidentally is reproduced on the Rhandirmwyn web site, along with surveys which I think are available on Aditnow. Mel Davies and Bruce Foster are sadly long dead but John Parker lives in the Pontypool area and might have info. Not sure how you'd get hold of him but might be worth contacting the Cwmbran Caving Club, which was also one of Mel Davies' clubs and to which John Parker was a key member.

Issue 8, November 1972, p.10 has a short note on the club's ongoing work at Nantymwyn. There was no mention of the project in Issue 9, December 1973. There was then an eight year gap in publication until Issue 10, part 1, in February 1981.

The 1970s journals extracted some of their articles from the club logbooks. In the apparent absence of any further published information, the best hope would seem to be the club logbooks - if they survive from that period. From my experience of caving club logbooks, they may well have contained sketch surveys as exploration progressed.

A recent photo, looking down from the engine house. On the slope opposite are some lines, possibly old field walls, which appear on the very first OS map too. Anyone have any ideas beyond mine for what they were for?
