Sounds like a good excuse for an expedition to Three Crosses to look for an adit. Will FairwoodBC declare an open day when the snow has gone.

Have shovel, will travel.

There were shallow collieries in the area in the early 19th C but were closed by the 20th C. Might be able to get into something. 😮
Cutting coal in my spare time.

The best route to information is to view the planning application file which should contain the details, possibly also includes a full Coal Authority report?

Edit: 1879 OS 1:2500 map shows what appears to be an adit, (marked as Slant) also, a boiler plus two air shafts at the site.

Based on that update I have a suspicion that AN database may be out a bit?

The ref in the AN database for New Gellyhir Colliery of 568933 is correct for Gellyhir Colliery on oldmaps.

559935 (the ref given on Welsh Coal Mines forum, relates to Whitewall Colliery. Both checked out on oldmaps.
Tried to plot 2 shafts and 1 level shown in Three Crosses, and get aprox refs of 57283 94191, 57242 94012 and 57322 94008. Will check for accuracy when "Where's the Path" is back up tomorrow.
Where there's a mine or a hole in the ground.
That's where I'm heading for that's where I'm bound
So follow me down Cousin Jack

My first post mentioning Slant and air shafts was this area, an area now in someones garden. Search was based on AN database and only questioned as 'Welsh Coal Mines' has a differing NGR.
