This Sunday 16th August, from 2.00 we are running the winder. We have specially hired a compressor which is quite expensive to run, so it might be on for only 10 minutes or so. Croeso i bawb

This isn't perchance the Barker & Cope beam engine which I've heard is there?

I have some pictures of the winder. I have just spent all afternoon looking for them without success. Will take some more tonight and will add them to the mine photos.

Those were the easy ones. A couple more to follow, but I have to turn then 90 degrees. More to follow tomorrow. I am usually there, most Sundays, 2.00 pm on. All welcome. But the winder is only running this Sunday. It was running yesterday evening. My 6 year old grandson even had a go. Stopping and starting the winder. It made his day.

Ooooh - made my day (even though it's not a beam engine!). It was made about 1/2mile from where I'm sitting & until I saw a b&w pic (just showing those fluted columns) I didn't even know there was an engine builder in Kidsgrove. Nor did the local historian at the library. They are listed however in one local trade directory of the time, but only one. So they must of been a short lived concern.
From the directory, the works was to the rear of where Kidsgrove Town Hall now stands & that was built in 1897.
I'd love to see it, it's a rare piece of local history - any chance we could have it back 😉

Not a hope in hell. I am not even allowed to add an electric motor. We have a steam boiler and there are plans to fire it up to run the winder. For now, we just hire a compressor and run it once a year.

There is one at Pleasley. They run their winder every weekend with an electric motor 😮
