Anglesey's 'grand canyon' described as the most extraordinary place in Wales by TV explorer
It's a historic landmark that provides a fascinating insight into the country's geological and industrial past.

But while Parys Mountain near Amlwch is known and loved by almost all who live on Anglesey, it's existence might not be common knowledge to others who live outside the area.

That could soon change however after the site was recently featured on a BBC TV programme shedding new light on the country's hidden landmarks.
Presenter Will Millard fell in love with the site while exploring the site and mine shafts beneath it, calling it "Wales's grand canyon".
Hidden Wales with Will Millard airs at 7.30pm on Fridays on BBC One Wales. You can catch up on previous episodes on BBC iPlayer.

We were walking round there only last week. I really must get in touch with the guys who explore it and arrange a trip.

Hmm, the Grand Canyon is a mile deep and 277 miles long. Seems like a mildly optimistic comparison!

I tend to think the "Great Open Cut" is/was a perfectly adequate name with the plus that it does without the silly hyperbole. Additionally I would be prepared to dip my toes in the Colorado but less so the acidic stuff on Parys.

Just an opinion of course, I have others if you want! However I'll aim to watch it as Millard has an engaging style.

I was all day underground at Cwmystwyth, result, 5 minutes of the program.

I had a couple of forays into television years ago; one for a programme about Moto Guzzi motorcycles and another about rock climbing. Its all a sham, even when it involves a relatively normal person like Will Millard. They selfishly take up hours and hours of your time, days in some cases doing their research for them, use you as a local fixer to get access to all sorts of things and then ****** off leaving you and your subject on the cutting room floor :lol:

Not much happening at the moment because of Covid.
Note, you MUST have BCA 3rd party insurance before we can take you in, or, join PUG which includes the insurance. The BCA rules changed a bit last year and we can't offer temp membership / insurance for one-off visits any more.

Jim Mc - the official terminology is 'Great Opencast' for the big pit and 'Hillside Opencast for the smaller one...

Ooops sorry Clive, my excuse is Silverband on Great Dun Fell used Open Cut for the gouge that used to be there, admittedly 20+ times smaller than your monster.

And if some day you come across some sad fellow who has calculated how much muck was shifted to make the hole I'd still be interested to compare it with my calcs for Pike Law's four mini-canyons - been playing on my mind y'know (tm, sort of, Neil Innes). :flowers:
