Hi everyone,

Im new to mine exploration but have a little bit of caving experience and I was looking at checking out Drws Y Coed mine with a friend as an intro trip while were in snowdonia.

I had a few questions about this mine:
I this mine suitable for novice explorers?
Is it easy enough to navigate?
How easy is it to locate the main entrance?

Any suggestions will be gladly taken 🙂

Thanks all!

Hello

Drws y Coed.

Nice mine.
Mostly under water.
Bits accessible.
If you are SRT proficient it opens up more areas.
Some bits suitable for novices, some not.
Navigation easy.
Entrances all over the place.
Plenty of surface stuff to look at.
Other mines in the area.

Check out the album on here:

Suggest that you buy a book and read up on the place and check out the plans. Suggest this one, from this seller:

It appears to be out of stock but he may be able to locate a copy for you.

Its / was a huge mine. Forget the depth but many, many fathoms. Only certain parts are accessible and you need to abseil to get to water / flooded areas....or do you?
I would need to refresh my memory really as its been a while...

TwllMawr knows more about it than I do these days; it seems to be his retirement project.
I'm sure he'll be along soon with more detailed info :flowers:

Main access is down the airshaft about 60ft (10 fathom) and requires rigging off a couple of old scaffold poles. This gives access to a small area of interesting workings, I'm convinced a bit of digging would reveal more in here and there certainly are some tempting looking dive spots

On the hillside there are some walk in adits but I haven't found anything hugely interesting.

It was a huge mine, a quick Google earth and you can see it dominated the landscape around for a large area with a labyrinth of leats and interesting surface features. It's all private land belonging to the farm so this needs to be kept in mind with regards to exploration, the hillside is also very open and any attempts at gaining access need to be kept discreet and respectful.

The old copper mines of snowdonia is well worth a read, it has output figures for the copper mines and Drws y Coed along with Llanberis and Lliwedd was the most productive of them all.

Thanks everyone for the insight into this mine!
I’ll have to have a gander at some walk in adits 🙂 thanks for all the info 😃

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
