I've had an interesting report from an acquaintance of mine ...

On 5th October there were three helicopters operating over Rhosydd Quarry and the surrounding area. One was making multiple passes over Cwmorthin (the cwm itself and the track up to Bwlch Rhosydd) - it later landed at Bwlch Rhosydd. The second was circling over the tyllau and the the third repeatedly flying over Cnicht, landing on the back then taking off and hovering just SW of the summit. All three helicopters had some sort of equipment slung under them.

In addition there were two Land Rovers in the Cwm and a Land Rover Defender and a Kawasaki Mule off-road people carrier up near the top of the track to the bwlch.

Presumably some sort of surveying was in progress, but does anyone know (or care to speculate) what might the purpose might have been?

Although the old 'series' models could, depending on conditions, ascend/descend/traverse at 45 degrees for short periods, 35 degrees was generally the official maximum due to sump oil level issues.:offtopic:

Back in the day I tried to drive up to Rhosydd. My plan was to drive in on the 9 adit. But I couldn't get up the steep bit (it was before the track was made up about 15 years ago).

Mari (Lakeside) did most of the catering as far as I could see. He did come and sit in the managers office by the fire for about 25 mins to have some food and warm up. Not met him before that, he seems a perfectly nice and actually quite hard working guy as far as my limited experience with him goes.

We helped with some of the underground features they wanted to do, of course to the experienced mine explorer watching the programme it will be nonsensical as was the last show we helped with. But it's just television designed to produce entertainment for its target demographic.

I mean a lot of people on here my sort of age probably got the bug for exploration watching the Goonies, how realistic is any of that? Does it matter?

Met him briefly through the Scouts and he seemed ok. Everything you see on TV is made up, edited and "spun"....even the BBC News in recent weeks.... 😞 ....so take it all with a pinch of salt.

As Chief Scout, he has helped and encouraged countless young kids to get into Scouting, off their computers and out of the house so for that alone he's fine in my book.
