Better late than never. We have not quite decided on what to do this evening, but at least we decided where to meet. We'll be at 18:15 at the layby at the southeastern end of Llyn Peris (53.107413, -4.095779). We might stick our noses into Llanberis Copper Mine, or have a mooch in one of the slate venues in the near vicinity. What to bring? The lot, I presume! :surrender:

Well, looks like you had plenty of exercise!

What is the tunnel for? Apart from not much?

There is a small building behind the hospital with water tanks in it. (They're made of slate! So Welsh!)
It's in there...

I could imagine it was meant as a water gathering tunnel thing (it is a bit drippy in there, and it clearly used to be bricked up with a pipe sticking out) that fills the tanks. Alternatively, maybe it was a trial for, eh, slate I presume (it is very beautifully red!) but when they weren't satisfied they decided to use it for water gathering purposes.

I suppose Wyn would say more informed things about it.

On the zig zag track leading up from the Eastern end of the hospital building?

Well according to the map, there is only one hair pin bend in the track, so that would be zig zag sensu lato... but the building is only meters from that bend so we didn't assess its actual zigzagginess.

Should I give it a preliminary name and create a site for it (or have an admin do that; I don't know what the protocol is) so I can plonk pictures on it? So far I put them in my personal album as this very obscure venue has no AN presence.

I know the one you mean! Walked past it hundreds of time and poked my head in it several times. Never spotted the tunnel :surrender:

Photos in the Dinorwic album would be fine; all part and parcel.

I think Margot's explanation(s) are as good as any. Perhaps they have more details at the museum archives. Interestingly the floor of the tunnel is about four foot lower than that of the buildings floor, with some narrow steps down to the dam.
Oh and some of us got to see a kingfisher, a nice sight (sorry Margot...)

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
