In true armchair explorer style, I was having a look at Vernon and Bennet Volume 7. It mentions a sulphur mine in the Afon Ddu valley. I had a poke up the gorge up the tourist climb a few years ago, but did not see any adits. Preumably these are further up the valley from the footbridge ?

There's nothing shown on the OS map in the Afon Ddu valley.

On a separate note, Derwen Deg is mentioned in the same volume, but deemed to be inaccessible due to being on private land. I suppose this is still the case almost 20years since the book was published?

Derwen Deg - Of course you could ask...
Many years ago was in contact with a friend of a friend who lived there, she said the main shaft was capped but it was possible to get under the cap, it had been explored by some cavers from Bangor. Always planned to go and have a look.

Cae-coch - the pyrite mine - is "sort of" in the Afon Ddu valley or at least close to it, but I doubt those authors would mix it up with anything else. Maybe there were some trials done looking for extensions to the pyrite deposit?

Cheers,

Yep, also a good flow of water coming out last time I was there (which was a while ago).

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
