To further the Caplecleugh discussions, a lot earlier in the year when it was cold, I was over in the White Syke end.
At the 5m pile that used to be Caplecleugh shaft, there is a rise going on up which as well as the water coming down through a broken pipe had an evilly cold draught coming down.
There would appear to be an open link to surface there and with the water flow and other pipework presumably workings.
High Level doesn't get that far so what does? Anyone got any ideas?

Directly above Caplecleugh shaft, shown as Foremost Rise on your Caplecleugh West Side 2010 V2 edition.
Rise goes into the South Cheek (?) Little Limestone Level, looks like about 40m up from CC horizon so would be a very long job bolt your way up! The upper level doesn't appear in the plans

Only 2 shafts I know to be open that end are Whimsey upon the Flatt (also known as Middle Whimsey I think) and Longholehead Whimsey - both to 100-110m but flooded. Lots of levels on way down though....

Hard going to SRT and explore - services of a winch are needed!

Yes, I've climbed the rise, with assistance from fellow MOLES - Colonel Mustard, Marra & the Late Martin Willey. The pipes come from a reservoir in a short x-cut part way up the rise. A further climb gives access to a level, which I think Roy, is a continuation of our 'Little Limestone' (LL) Level, accessed further outbye. A smaller diameter pipe runs down the rise & feeds the reservoir below . The level is badly collapsed both ways. I suspect the pipe, which exits from beneath the western roof fall (Only small - 6" diameter approx) is fed from old workings - Longholehead Whimsey was descended years ago by CATMHS and reported to be flooded part way down???
Considering the impressive size of this rise at the Low Level horizon, the top at LL Level horizon is rather insignificant looking!
My opinion on the purpose of the pipes, was to power a hoist, lifting loaded wagons from workings on Whitesike Level (the G. Limestone dips below Caplecleugh at this point) up to Caplecleugh, for tramming out to the main dressing plant at Nenthead (V.M. era?).

Anyway, there is a sump down to the little limestone level and I expected something sizeable, maybe SRT able. What I found was a small, possibly 3 ft square, timber lined and now very much all pinched in, manway.

1986, they were able to get off at "a little over 200' " at an intermediate level (this doesn't appear to have held anything of interest), descending further they met water with no way off.

Middle Whimsey - is that the one in the wood? If it is, I do know someone who went down... from what he told me, nothing much of interest, but he still has nightmares :blink:

There is another, (would need to look at a map) but much closer to the ones in the other thread, short sub level part way down, but choked at the bottom.

Whimsey upon the Flatt is the one at the end of the track in a triangular patch of field, Minecam refer to it as the Middle Whimsey, but has the same grid ref as Flatt.

I remember that sump on the High Level (as well as the gas & bad air), it was on the right of the level, a few feet from the forehead. There was no sign of it on the LL Level.
