Think Mr Mike's first guess was spot on.

Ah, I have a little of the left side missing, mine ends at 'ne Shaft'. But I don't think that its the one above the fans.

The Sump Foot Whimsey that CJ Curry pointed out may well access CC High L, but not above the fan rise. I don't know if this one is even open. However, moving a bit more west to the fence and gate there are shafts there that are open. One of which vents, went down it in 2004 - see:

Hi Roy,
You have got my permission to digitise the plan I gave you.
It is a copy of part of the Greenwich Hospital Estate Plan.
Recently I made copies of most of the rest of it, it was a hell of a job.
The most difficult part was actually at the end to find a machine to run the die-line.
Going back n time I reckon I was in the first group of explorers up there.
My records tell me it was August bank holiday weekend 1977.

My "one above the fans" is on the first landing its a few feet over on your left. You can get over fallen timber into it, and if you dont mind the shower look up it. Lots of stemple sockets.

On the high level horizon, now I am vague as its been years since I was last up there, there is an area on the eastern end you have to climb up into and the shaft is much modified by VM, stages and ladders, the latter having now fallen. Its probably written up in my account, but I am trying to do a lot of things at the same time here and not feeling well.

I have to say that I was a bit disappointed with the high level complex as my imagination had run riot about what I might find up there. But is was in truth an exciting time of my life.
I will have to re read my own account tomorrow, refresh my memory and all that.

EDIT
Hello John, postings interleaved.
My avatar is a poor likeness.

Has anyone been up on the moor for a look at these shafts?
Would anyone be keen to investigate further?
It appears I've opened up a very interesting can of worms with this thread!

I looked at them all in the late 90's with Edd Brown & never found a way onto any of the horse levels unfortunately!

I think Caplecleugh Engine shaft is at approx NY785421, there is a large grassed over dump beside the track. The shaft is completely run in.

Yep, that looks like the same spot - shame if it's completely run in, but that draught must be coming from somewhere. Mr. Mike's shaft over near the gate sounds very interesting though, from your overlay it looks like it could be the sublevel or Caplecleugh High. Well worth a look.

Sounds like a mission up to the high level is in order at some point as well... I'm out of the country for the next three weeks, but if Steetleysurfer and anyone else fancied a trip when I'm back I'd be keen. 🙂

I would be up for it in the New Year - however from past experience up on the fell at this time of year hanging around can turn your bits and bobs into balls of ice.

We got pulled up by a keeper when we were rigging a shaft somewhere NW of Perrys Dam a few years ago. Are there generally problems when you get up onto the moor? Would quite fancy a look back.

I'd be keen for a look up. And yes, that moor can be bleak.

I met the head keeper about 9 years ago whilst all we could manage was a wonder around due to a mother of a hangover. Got chatting and exchanged details. Ever since if we are up there I call him and let him know we will be up on the top, with a car detail and it has been fine. However it's not for me to pass on his details. They just like to know who is up there particulary if a car is up as well.

My experience is that if you ask permission, the keepers -who work for the landowners - are generally agreeable.

I am usually at Nenthead at least once per week. Next time the snow is complete, I will have look on the moor top to see if any shafts are venting through the snow.

That's fair enough really. They're just trying to do a job and protect their investment. It's just polite to let someone know what you're up to.

Changed days, really!
I remember a time, when the the Catholic Trust had just taken over the estate, and the keepers, tried to keep mine explorers out of the Nenthead mines.
We used to see if their land rovers were about, and if not then underground we disappeared.
This state of affairs continued until Mine Tours, started up, when Dave Wilson and his mates asked payment for venturing into the mines.

Off for another look at the high level on Sunday.
I shall post on here the condition of the ropes etc...

Did you have fun in the shale band collapses on the way in? We went through on Sat.

I didn't get down.
My other half had a sickness bug, so I had to take care of my young 'un.
How was the shale?

Yep. Just seen that.
It's in a state isn't it.
It has looked different each time I've been through recently (4 times since oct.).
I know exactly which cantilevered block you mean.
I've never hung around long enough to take pictures mind. I generally like to get those falls out of the way as quickly as possible!

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
