Just found this site which may be of interest

http://www.cwmorthin.com/9._the_people.html

In regards to the underground workings, the following paragraph taken from the "people of Cwmorthin" page, caught my attention.

Carwenna Williams recorded a little about her life in the valley during a BBC Cymru
programme in which she states the following -

"My Uncle would get up at 5 in the morning in order to walk over the tops to the Oakley
quarry, although there was a tunnel that went straight through from Cwmorthin."

Wonder which underground connection betwen the quarries is referred to here? No clear date is given which might make it a bit easier to try and guess which route this might have been. I'm intrigued!

There is also a section on geology of the valley which makes interesting reading.

The only thing that jumps straight to mind is the connection between Cwmorthin old vein floor 2 and Oakeley floor 4 where it says "door" on the plan.

Hard to say in the long run I would think. Could just be referring to Cwmorthin C - Oakeley 1 or just floor DE.
FILTH - Think this is a playground? Think again...

Yes, these are possibilities. Or just maybe, the "Lost World" connection from Lake level back vein into Oakeley, now isolated from the rest of Oakeley by falls, may have been another option. I wonder how long this way through has been blocked. If the Llyn Bach cracks have something to do with it, which is quite possible, probably for quite a long time.

What ever connection it was, maybe not something a quarry man would want to do alone with quite probably only a candle for illumination!

Depends on the era, but there were a lot of connections at different heights as the underground boundary was nowhere as defined as the surface boundary.

The 'door' marked on the plan would have been the earliest, though.
