We were over at Llanbeder with a bunch of Landrover friends weekend just gone .
Whilst we were mooching around we headed up to Cwm Bychan and spotted a small adit at the side of the road at the top end at the side of the lake .

To be honest Ive been up there a bucket load of times before and never seen it before ....
Vegetation was obviously just at the right stage to spot it this time ...
probably little more than a trial though

There's loads of stuff worth seeing up there....including my first ever mine! Explored, aged 8, with a 9v torch "borrowed" from the kitchen and a tow rope tied around my waist

Did you manage to get a grid ref on it?

May be worth searching here:

http://www.hendrecoed.org.uk/

to see if Davel has any info on it?

We have a vague idea to have a Saturday up there over the Summer. Feel free to join us

ps bring the Landrovers, save a walk!

Yayy weve mooched around the manganese workings AND the gold around Dolgellau as well as various ROC posts in the area (Llanbedr's is especially nice).
Cwm Bychan is sort of a pilgrimage for us when we are camping on Shell Island ...
We have to bring the Landrovers ....they are our only vehicles (Mind all 5 are off the road ATM)

Oddly we seem to have a fair few folks on the series landrover forum we run that are madly into exploring old mines too ....

Must be the shared love of rusty old machinery lol

Jeremy Wilkinson recorded this as "Llyn Cwm Bychan mine" but, as his only reference is the fact that it exists on the map, this is probably just the name he gave to it based on the nearest named feature. On the 6" map it's just marked as "Level" and, as has been said above, is probably just a trial. (There is another, similarly marked, "Level" not far to the north east of it.)

Although there are manganese workings nearby in Cwm Mawr, I don't think this is connected with them as it's some way off the manganese bed outcrop. It is more likely to have been a trial for copper or lead.

Series Landrovers/Causeways and salt water ....
errr Nooo thanks lol

Oddly enough on the copper comment ...it did cross my mind as there was some evidence of green staining on a few rocks outside the entrance .

Slightly further up towards the parking area there is what appears to be a track/tramway rising up to another small scratching .

Hi there i have been in most of the adits in cwm bychan and there is a lot 12 plus and i think this one is a trial ,it comes to a end just after it turns left, the first one you come to after leaving the car park at nantmor is very interesting and further up the valley on the right there is an adit that goes about 100yds and looks to be very old, high on the hill side on the rihgt hand side of the left valley if that makes sence is a nother adit wich looks even older, hope this helps. dave;D

The adit in mistericeman's post is in a different Cwm Bychan, not the Aberglaslyn one but further south.

I'm afraid I cant help on this one. I spent Sunday in the muddy depths of Coed Crafnant mine.:o

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
