Just visited today with a few friends and had lunch in the compressor chamber. I was amazed how the lights came on when I worked the big switch.

Good Job to the person or persons who made this happen. it was great to eat our meal in the light 😉

Perhaps try a Yorkshire mine. They don't have lights, zip-wires, plaques bolted to walls or other litter! [/haughty] ::)

Ah, it's been fixed then.

Makes for a nice Easter Egg, as long as you don't mind being elbowed whilst you eat!

Blober and 666jay had it in pieces the other night but not sure how far they had got. We put our wetsuits on and went for a swim, leaving them to it.
I also think Corin was going back to take a look at it too.
Well done "whoever" .

Incidentaly while I was there I went up the manway at the back of the compressor chamber and along the hurdles looking for the ladder leading down from chamber 8 East to 7 East. I thought I was in the right spot as I remembered climbing the side of 8East a couple of weeks ago. I couldn't spot the squeeze through and was convinced I was in the wrong chamber.
There may have been a small collapse blocking the way through the squeeze. Might be worth investigating as if its blocked anyone coming up the ladder might find the way blocked.
Might be me who was looking in the wrong place but just thought I would mention it.

I suspect you were looking in the wrong place - did the same myself once. The opening is not all that obvious.

There are 2 new batteries, one with Miles and one installed.

The difficulties of charging a battery, long term, are too time consuming as is the lack of water in situ.

So back to stand alone battery 😉

What voltage do the lamps work on. If it helps I have a good quantity of 24V 25W lamps with the standard BC cap base. Its quite amusing when the girls at work take them thinking they are a standard mains bulb though.

As you asked:
The original Sturmer Archer dynamo produced 6v, that was transformed up by 4:1 (close to the wheel) then transformed down to 6v by a second transformer (in the compressor chamber) rectified, smoothed and limited to charge the battery. A diode was included for when the battery was not charged.

The bulbs are SpeedyCaver specials with extra circuitry added to cope with variable volts and amps.

It's not blocked. 😉 The 'hole' through from 8E to the ladder is quite small though and can be difficult to spot sometimes if you don't do it often.

Go over the Hurdles, and when you enter chamber 8E look almost straight opposite to the far wall, go across to that wall and then follow it up for about 10 feet, although the opening cannot be seen from the far side it is pretty obvious when you get to it.

It was myself and Peter who installed that ladder a few years back now.
