All
I've just done a building survey for a guy who works for a quarrying company. He owns a lead mine, but hasnt a clue what it is called or when worked. This is all he can tell me about it:

I have made efforts to locate the exact whereabouts of the mine outside Trefriw but all I can tell you is that it is on the land behind Coed gwydyr (a row of terraced house about a mile north of Trefriw) which is essentially woodland...

Thing is, do any of you Welsh explorers have any idea about it? We'd have access to it, if only I can tell him a bit more !

From the described location it's possibly North D'Eresby lead mine at SH778642

Full account of the mine's history in J.Bennett & R.W.Vernon "Mine sof the Gwydyr Forest part 7", Warrington, 1997, pp.45-50.

Comprised five adits and two shallow shafts, all of which seem to have been scarcely more than trials, having produced only a couple of tons of lead and zinc ore in the mid nineteenth century when worked under the name Bryn y Pyll. Reopened late 1870s as North D'Eresby Mountain, an essentially fraudulent promotion. Reopened as Conway Lead & Silver Mine just before the Great War; in 1915 the lowest adit was stated to be 133 yards long; the venture was abandoned in 1920.

Brilliant guys, Thank you! Very much appreciated.. I'll give him the good news that he's an up and coming silver baron! He works for Hanson by the way, so if anyone has access issues, he seems open to helping gain sensible access to their Welsh operations....

From looking at maps etc. a better grid reference might be SH777643. This is my best guess for the south-west extent of the worked sett. There is a shaft marked at SH779645 which I take to be the north-east extent of the workings.

http://www.hendrecoed.org.uk/Wilkinson/search/  and search 'sites' for lead mines within 300 m of SH777643. To see the references set the display to 'gazetteer entries'.

Thanks yet again - I've just emailed it all to him. He and his brother own the land - they aren't quite sure what to do with it all. If anyone fancies a look around, let me know and I'll put you in touch.. Be interesting to know the geology / mineralogy of the place.
