Blimey, there is a lot of arm-twisting going on here. I'm not entirely convinced there's enough space for two up there, but I'm happy to give it a try, or be debris shoveller below. Top and bottom crew of the shaft will have to communicate well by the way!

And Sinker, it can only become a long-term project if we can keep that rope there for that long! If not we'll have to do it soon, or put some smart polyprop-aided pull-through system in place or something.

I asked DonStuart about the rope and he said, and I quote, "Plenty more where that came from. Leave it there as long as you like." Sorted

I always intended that the rope would stay in. Just cut it off at the bottom of the shaft & the rest can be used to replace any of the other drops if it was deemed worthwhile. We might just need some of it if the blockage can be cleared.

Not having seen the blockage, this may be a daft idea, but might it be possible to let off a 'smoke bomb' & hope to see something appearing on the hillside?

Oh that's sorted then! Do you have a tree on which rope grows, Don? And a smoke bomb, hmmm I see your point, but the blockage looked rather impermeable to me. Willy Eckers took pictures up there (I didn't), I suppose they might end up here and then you can judge for yourself!

I only had my point and shoot camera with me, so no great photos, but this is what we're faced with:

It's hard to tell whether it's a full scale blockage or if there's a small gap at the top. Without unclipping from the safety line I couldn't get a closer look. I think the next step is to put a bolt into the left hand wall for closer access.

And some eedjits for scale:

Thanks for the photo's Willy.

Not having been up the maypole/rope to look at the blockage, the photo's give me a much better idea of what it all looks like.

It reminds me of the pile of spoil you can see as you go in through the Smoke Flue at Cwm.

Could we be looking at a level rather than a shaft with the large rocks having been the roof & the loose spoil coming down from a pocket above? - Just a thought.

It is possible that a level continues beyond the loose stuff, I couldn't see well enough from my "safe" position. But the layout looks very similar to that at the bottom - a shelf leading through to a shaft. I can picture a whole series of these leading up the mountain. What purpose they'd have or how they'd be worked is another matter. If it was an ore chute, it would have been hard to clear if it became choked. But perhaps it did!

I do like your idea of smoke signals but wouldn't want to be up there when it's in full flow.

Margot, I'm still trying to think of an innocent reply to that suggestion. đŸ˜®

Oh dear oh dear, all that maypoling seems to have smeared your hitherto undoubtedly pristine, white as driven snow soul! But I'm serious here: shouldn't we do a bit more inclusive things on Thursday nights? And then do the, well, dealing with that blockage, which only keeps a few people busy at a time, during the weekend, with people who like that sort of thing?

See my post regarding an "all-inclusive Thursday Nighters trip". ;)

In the spirit of democracy, I have made a couple of suggestions so put it to the vote....

Yes you're quite right, it's unfair for a large group to have to wait around all evening like last week. The first couple of sessions here worked well when we were making steady progress but that's gone to pot rather. Mind you, we'll be grateful for lots of help when we have to haul all our junk back out!
I could be up for a return next Saturday evening (not too late) if that suits anyone.

I could do all next Saturday if that helps.
