Just to let everyone know that I got home safely to Leeds in about 3 hours. Thanks to everyone for keeping me safe today and for showing me some amazing places.

Looking forward to my next trip but its a bit far to come for a Thursday night ๐Ÿ™‚

Sounds like everyone on Sunday had a good time! Likewise the group on Saturday. Massive thanks to Willy Eckers, Davel, Skimble and Corin for joining in. My work colleagues were suitably impressed with what Cwm had to offer. Even I saw a lot of new ground on this trip. Hadn't been up to see the 1939 'graffiti' before - a quick word on this - it looks like some folk have been standing on the slab a bit too close and there's some degradation. We saw Miles arriving on our way out and he say's he'll consider putting a temporary barrier around the slab so folk can still see and photograph the names but stop them from climbing too close. Be a real shame to lose those.

A little query, went to the small caban - the one built into a passage that the miners partially walled up at each end (the one the 'Victorian miners' used earlier in the year). Had never noticed the 'window in the back wall before so went up to it and peered through. The passage continues beyond - straight across is a low wall across the passage and another passage continues to he right. Eckers hadn't spotted that before either. Is this in forbidden Oakeley territory or are we allowed through the 'window' and what's there? This caban is off Graham I's map bottom L corner. Could be worth looking on my next trip if it's on Cwm territory...

If you go over the chest high slate wall it drops into a chamber, if you carry on to the right it carries on into a continuation of the caban, Complete with "table and bench"

Thanks for that, have to have a look next trip.

I guessed someone would know, not many areas of Cwm haven't been 'discovered' yet!

Believe it or not there's ground to the right of the caban we used for the Victorian day as well... If you imagine you've come from the Queen Mary caban towards the Victorian caban you take a winding tunnel then scramble over a small collapse just before you turn left into the Victorian caban. Turn right there and there's a collapse at the entrance of a level. That opens into another chamber and then a bit more level. If memory serves Skimble headed through there and one or two of us followed. Not entirely recommended - very bad ground!
my orders are to sit here and watch the world go by

Sorry for delay in posting. I have been without phone and internet for nearly two days:curse: Any how just want to say that it was really nice day and good to meet other mine explorers from further away. If any of you visit Blaenau again feel free to drop into Pingu Towers for a brew:thumbsup:.

Thanks Simon. Sounds a bit dodgy to me! Still, will be worth a look next time.

Cheers

I think the 'one or two' might have been Simon and myself and RockChick in November 2010. We got into the continuation of the tunnel but from the footprints we obviously weren't the first in there.

Skimble and myself went into that area one floor down (i.e. H floor) when Oakeley was being pumped (in March 2010 I think). We got into some very unpleasant tunnels with slate spalling off the walls in multiple thin layers. All very sharp and quite fresh looking (and fresh smelling) and as far as I was concerned discretion was definitely the better part of valour.

When I was in there last Saturday I noticed some more rock had come down where the tunnel on G floor to the east of chamber 34 has a window into the back of a chamber.

The footprints might have been left by explorers who had climbed the staircase (remains of) from Floor H

rather than wriggling through the collapse on G as we did.

Yes, I noticed that Dave. Even more has come down since April. That wall is seriously stressed with many cracks around 'the window'... :o

Finally found the little tucked away caban, Thursday evening.(with help from "Blober") I think it might be roughly below another area we looked at on floor F: - proceeding eastwards from the zigzag manway in chamber 33, the ground becomes similarly broken. Interestingly ,chamber 31 above on floor DE has also seen better days โ€“ None of this is an area to linger in: there are cracks in the walls of the level, and down on floor G, in the vicinity of the little tucked away caban, a noticeable smell of freshly fallen slate, as mentioned above.

Was wondering if going east on G and F from the incline, would once have lead into the area of old vien lost beyond the now collapsed new vien/old vien timbered cross cut tunnels.

In summary, the ground becomes increasingly bad as one moves east away from the incline on both levels. Hamster and I went no further than what looked like a collapse cavity, a couple of chambers east of the zigzag manway. I guess the level runs in completely further along.

All off plan here anyway

Haha in case the "old" reference offended anyone, what I actually meant was that the photo looks old, like something from the '70s? You so rarely see photos on film, its quite nostalgic. The Vauxhall Corsa in the background gives it away, but somehow my BM on the right in the background looks "correct", must be the retro colour and styling

What a great photo. Really enjoyed my trip that day thanks for the memento. On the strength of that visit I have booked a cottage up at Conwy for a week just before Christmas so another look around will be in order for me. ๐Ÿ™‚ :):)

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
