The only thing better than a good dig is a building project to avoid having another dig.

How about a combination of both, with buckets of concrete and ladders to carry them up and down thrown in?

I was thinking of the car polishing in the movie "The Karate Kid" and trying to fit it into a sort of exercise program.
I have to think of something down there all on my own.

My damaged foot has now recovered.
This kept me away from the Capelcleugh dig event.
So, snow willing Rob and I should be along on the 6th, complete with polybags and spade.

Was speaking with duracell bunny about this, and he mentioned the NORPEX steel frame that was just sitting in the water doing nothing, dismantled and moved?

Know it is not as high, but feet could be raised on timber or timber stack on top of it.

Thinking of the free norpex frame work. I'm just wondering get if we could use air pipe to extend the height?

There is a lot of air pipe and spare Norpex kit lying around.

Discussions on-site acknowledged the need to carry out any remediation work safely and sensitively and balance artefact/context destruction against the potential loss of an important area of the mine.

To try and keep things in one thread, the story so far:

As a result of the trip in, after a fair amount of standing around, often in the least HSE approved place possible, and saying things like that looks well dodgy we decided to clear the fall, separating the walling stone from the rubbish.
In the process of clearing the pile we found some timber with an iron lift ring on it and a hole below, this had the harbingers of doom suggesting we were standing on top of another shaft. Undeterred by this we cleared the hole and discovered it was a concrete lined cistern and the sludge that was cleared out had a strong smell of fuel oil which had us speculating that it was some kind of oil trap and that maybe there had been an engine refuelling station in this location. This will need to be named in keeping with current North Pennine naming conventions this will need a suitable name - The Trap of Fear perhaps.

Having stacked up all the walling stone it was then decided to build a plinth (The Plinth of Doom) in the middle of the junction, to provide a base from which props for the remaining arching can be located. This should help to prevent further arch collapse and prevent any further debris from blocking access to both the horse level inbye and the shaft.
We intend to use lengths of the compressed air pipe for the supports, as this will ensure that the job has a better chance of being finished. The location will require significant haulage to get any appreciable quantity of gear in, which in turn will require a large amount of manpower and the NORPEX doors are not exactly conducive to easy transport.

On the NORPEX front, there is some spare framing but it is a long way outbye and would require a lot of work to move it to the fall site.
At the moment, there is a pretty good supply of building stone so we will carry on with that.

If you fancy a trip in please let me know, this job will take quite a few trips and the more helpers the better. :)

The plinth of doom???? A tad pessimistic about its chances of success???? Or is this a deliberate attempt at under rating it just in case it goes and f@cks up leaving the roof on the floor, the ground above the roof nearer the floor, and a good chunk of the hillside opposite cherry tree nearer the centre of the earth in the process....
You really missed your vocation in advertising...;D

More because of the imminent doom you face from the roof when building the plinth. :)
See also Shaft of Doom (versions 1 - n), Ladderway of Suppurating Slime, Devil's Sphincter, Bridge of Mild Trepidation, et all; but I digress...

Sounds more like a cave with those names, but don't get renaming Rampgill.

I think it should be given it's full Title!
Rampgill Shaft Level Supporting Pillar or RSLSP, but of course until it is completed it is supporting rather stale air!
I think we should reconvene about the end of the second week in January, and see how far we can get towards finishing the job, just a suggestion, for the date.

What's not sensible with Plinth of Doom? Lying on it for any length of time is certainly doom laden 🙂

Also I think it is only fair for those who have done the work to call it what they like.

Liking that one John.
Might be an idea to start cutting air pipes then also
