Thanks for the link Dave.

Real shame to hear about the collapse. As one person said on that UKC thread there was a really nice tranquil atmosphere in Mordor.

I hope nobody was in the hut.

I do remember looking across at - what I presume - has collapsed from the back wall about mid-way up the pit about a year ago and thinking the slab didn't look well attached, large visible cracks. Not sure if I took any photos, will check later tonight but suspect not.

Some photos of the collapse. It's a big one!

General view of Lost World - collapsed area easily seen from the different rock colour:

The bottom of the pit is certainly a mess. Supersize this photo and you can see all the snapped trees:

I haven't got a good photo of the bottom of the pit before the collapse, this is the closest I could find. The hut is presumably buried under all those boulders. Ignore the hand gestures... this is what I have to put up with :)

This was the bit I thought might have collapsed but has not - some nasty cracks in the opposite wall:

As an aside it looks like somebody is setting up a truly audacious slackline - or a zip wire - there is a thin wire stretched fully across the pit presumably there for hauling something heavier across:

Must have made some noise!

This slackline was set up a few years ago when we were there in absolutely awful conditions:

Was fairly terrifying to look at even without somebody on it. It would be a good way to make the CRTT somewhat less of an eyesore however & cut down on some of the traffic!

Think that's a different slackline... this one would be about 5 times longer:o

Looking the last pic, it looks like the collapse triggered a small collapse to the LHS of the scrub growing on the sides. It's amazing how that other stuff is still managing to stay up.

Any idea when it happened? Was there late April
& we'd popped out of the adit at the top left of the first photo (Garret?) to look down on the pit. Don't recall there being any obvious sign of collapse. Typically only photos I took were looking away from the bottom & the wall in question!

Took a couple of friends round Snakes and Ladders on the 7th june and there had been a small rockfall from that area with bits of rock falling while we were there, pretty scary to think that we had climbed down the ladders behind the hut had a look in and walked to the tunnel to Mordor most of wich appears to be covered with debris 😮

Was planning on doing snakes and ladders again this summer and staying overnight in the hut 😮

I did see one photo that suggested that the debris from the fall hit the hut and destroyed part of the wall but not sure.
For the abseil into that area you might want to take a hanger and nut for one of the two bolts at the top as someone has removed it for some reason, though by the time you do it it may have been replaced.
Have another mate who wants to do it so will be interesting to see the extent of the fall.

Alex.
