Hi Skimble

Is this the extent of the accessible underground working here? Had this place on the list of Thursday possibles... But just seen your photos and it looks like it might be a long walk for not much underground :(

I think there may be access to underground workings higher up. Perhaps JonK et al can provide more information.

Thanks. That's what I thought... I spoke to somebody - can't recall who it was - who talked about some false floor in a stope then a void that would need to be crossed...

There is accessible underground stuff if you go higher up. You can enter a level (with false floor), and abseil down one level. I forget what happens next, whether there is possibility of a 2nd abseil or not.
I also forget what happens if you try to get along the level further. It is heading directly towards Britannia Copper Mine - maybe that is where the connection is!!

The mine is basically a big stope, with various levels. We considered going further up, but have yet to do so.

The adit is fairly obvious by the different coloured spoil outside. Quite a challenge to actually get to it as I recall!!

Might be worth checking the height of that level and seeing if it corresponds to any of the Brittania side. Such stories exist everywhere, rarely true I thought although recently I've found out one near me could very well nearly be true.. so let's hope about Clogwyn Coch 😛

There are more accessible workings but you do need to scramble up the cliffs to gain entry and being frank I have been in more exciting mines. Once in the level it is possible to descend, together with a lot of water, into a stope at the bottom of which is a very wet level which is blocked outbye. A prompt ascent is assured due to the amount of falling water. Of all the mines around Snowdon this is the least interesting underground with Llanberis Copper Mine, Britannia and Lliwedd/Cwm Erch all being more interesting. The surface remains at Clogwyn Goch are worth a look and when walking up it becomes clear that the Llanberis path up Yr Wyddfa was originally a miners track at least as far as the mine.

If this connects to Britannia I will bare my arse on stage at the NAMHO conference - sorry but it ain't going to happen!

there are detailed plans of Britannia at Bangor University from the time of its last closure; these show absolutely no indication of any connection.
