Indeed it was a great evening. Good to test out my gear on the pitches, but it seems my body's centre of gravity is giving me problems ascending where there is not a rock face to put my feet. My body goes backwards thus twisting the croll off centre which then creates resistance. Then I cannot asscend unless the rope is weighed down or someone holds the rope at the bottom of the pitch. Even with the chest harness really tight.
But life is not perfect is it.
Maybe some lead weights on my legs might sort it πŸ™‚

Next time we meet you can try that spare chest harness (rather than strap) of mine. With the very low attachment point of my new MTDE caving harness I was having the same trouble that you describe, but Chris' suggestion of a crab from the chest harness onto the rope made all the difference. It's loose enough to slide along the rope without getting in the way, but prevents me from tipping over backwards when I let go

I find that I have to tighten my chest harness down so far that I literally cannot stand up straight.....and can barely walk....before ascending. If its a long climb I pull the chest harness down until I'm standing like a Sumo wrestler! Its very uncomfortable until I get on the rope but when the jammer and harness are taking all the weight its fine.

The things we do for fun eh?

Having moved things about a bit on my kit it seems to be working a lot better now. But I will tie my bag on the bottom of the rope next time. With a block of slate in it .
Yes the things we do for fun, but bloody brilliant fun though πŸ˜‰
