hi- just got in from a day at Croesor / rhosydd - and in the canoe chamber - the pulley system for moving the boat is defunct

the line to return it to the coesor end is joined / knoted / tangled

there is no rope to pull the canoe to the rhosydd end

all pullies are intact / oprational

it just needs the correct legths of line refitting

we tried to make repairs with various items of tat found in situ - but they were inadequate

repair will be relativly simple - if someone takes a sufficient size real of sutible cordage

sadly we had notthing - so just got our party across as best we could

PS - all other insitu ropes are in servicable condition

though someone has tied knots in the final rope [ canoe chamber - assent rope to rhosydd ] - making it hard for people with short legs to get thier croll on the rpe

There is a load of blue poly prop buried in there some where to replace it. I will ask John where it is for the next trip 🙂

Hi all,

First post here but hope to be of some help. I'm off down there this weekend for the first time.

If its not ridiculously hard to find (first trip and all) if someone PMs me the location of the stash I'll replace.

Alternatively, if someone tells how much I need, I'll take an appropriate amount of blue poly down with me.

Any news on the zip-line pulley since AndyJ23Uk's report on 30-09-2013. ah147 did you go down?

I'm taking 50m blue poly - will leave in situ for the dinghy pull-back if needed.

4 of us will be down this week on the 2nd.

Generally the Chamber of Horrors worked better when it had a fixed rope to pull yourself along; and a pull-back cord to drag everything across when empty.

With the greatest of respect to those who rigged the endless rope, the friction in the system tends to make like difficult; and as soon as there is a break in the rope, the whole thing is knackered.

That said there were plenty of people who seemed to get the original version wrong, so unless it gets signage 😮 anything is probably doomed...

Amused to read that the term 'chamber of horrors' has stuck. It comes from an account l wrote in about 1994 about my first crtt. Unfortunately it sounds as though our amateurish blunderings have been repeated too often recently. I feel guilty about that, particularly in the esteemed company of this forum.

My account which was once placed on the internet by the north wales caving club, has since been taken off (probably a good thing) but the title obviously stuck !
My childish cartoons persist however as a link at the bottom of the UK caving wiki page.

Completed CRTT on 03-01-2014. All equipment and lines fully operational and in good condition. The pull-back line for the canoe is in place and working

sumpjumper I read your original report before going. Although the trip is much safer now your account definitely put the willies up me and our approach to this trip was certainly one of great respect!

The first abseil rope is in excellent condition. The second pitch had two ropes; an old one badly frayed which we hauled up and left at the pitch head; the other one we left in place and was in fine condition.
