Hey. Would anyone know of a way to get down to this?

Abseil in from just over the gate at the Llanberis end of the pit.

There sre handy trees to rig off. Rope protection needed at the edge, although the ground overhangs the slab so its spongy rather than the usual razor sharp slate edge.

Sinker is looking over the edge in the general area here:

Note, the picture in the same album of a rope down into the pit - not the best place and not where we ended up dropping it. The slab adjacent to the road is quite loose and very sharp.

I understand the bridge is a movie prop. Not an original.

It was on a few months back and wasn't nearly as awful as I'd remembered. And the soundtrack by Tangerine Dream was palatable enough.

Ah there you go. I knew that there must have been a good reason why I hadn't watched it... 😉

If they left it there can't they be prosecuted for littering ? 😉

Who? Symphonic synth-prog bores Tangerine Dream?

I'd second that! :guns:

They're rather more interesting than most of what you hear on Radio 1 or 2.

Well it fooled Alun John Richards ... there is a picture of it on page 38 of "Fragments of mine & mill in Wales".

Incidentally I once tried finding the bridge from the Grid Ref used in the book. It looked to me as if you would be able to see it from the public road.

Where does one go to get a glimpse?

Many thanks,

Andy

I guess the bridge may be original, I was just going off what I'd been told. If AJR documented it before the film set was built then I imagine that proves the case that it is original.

As for finding it...

Head up the narrow hill opposite Pete's Eats in Llanberis (Pete's is on a crossroad, head uphill away from the lake), steep hill, levels out as you leave the village then gets narrower. Continue past the rear of the Siemens (was EuroDPC) factory. Road steepens again and the widens with fences on both sides. You're looking for a short straight stretch that goes between two pits - tall fences on each side. Distance from Llanberis probably 2/3 mile. Bridge is at the bottom of the higher pit (on your left if coming from Llanberis). You can park a bit lower down and climb over the fence near the rusty gate.

SRT needed to get down into the pit.

This road continues to Cwm y Glo, or turn back and get a Big Jim in Pete's :)

Hope those rambling directions made sense!

Many thanks. Always have a chip buttie at Pete's when I am allowed up to NW.

AJR's book I mentioned was first published 2002.

In fact the photo in the book makes more sense if it was a prop - there are no signs of any tramway connecting to it.

I notice on Old Maps (1914 1:2500) that there was a tunnel that appears to run from the eastern pit, does it still exist?

Just a thought , if the only access to this quarry is to abseil into it
How did the quarrymen get to work or get the slate out ?

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
