I wouldnt say you need to go with a group but Helmets would be a sensible thing to wear underground as slate can be very sharp! I can send you some lovely pictures to prove it if you want

At 6'1" I smack my head often enough that I wouldn't get down the first adit before knocking myself unconscious if I didn't wear a helmet. :curse:

Surprised he came back after the flaming in this thread from a year back on pretty much the same topic.

The flaming? from a bunch of "mine explorers" who told me it was to dangerous to go down there, it was very unique but pretty timid, but thanks for your two penneth worth.

Yes it was timid by the standards of some other sites but it's all relative isn't it?

the bunch of mine explorers as you put it are the same ones who would have to come drag your body out when you slice your scalp open . if you dont like it dont post your crap on here .

Helmets? Has anyone mentioned helmets?

You're asking for trouble if you're going underground without helmets: it's not so much the fact that you might bang your head on the roof, but rather more that you're halfway down a pitch when one of your clumsy acquaintances inadvertently knocks a load of rocks down onto your bonce from the pitch head.

Also, Croesor is a rather crumbly mine with a history of bits of roof falling off. In reality, most of what might fall down is so big that whether or not you were wearing a helmet will have made no difference at all, but it will at least keep all the squidgy bits of your head in the same sort of place.

Of course, if you happened to be lucky and only have a small piece of roof land on you, then the helmet might have proved vital.

If you want any advice on type/make/source, start a new thread/look for an old one, I'm sure there's plenty of us happy to help.

I think my helmet cost about four quid and is a basic builders one.

Not the right thing for the job, given it lacks a chin strap, but it's hit a fair few ceilings in its time and saved me a lot of sore noggins...

Point is, it doesn't have to be expensive. You'd be better off spending forty quid on a decent helmet with a chinstrap, but it's not going to be ten times better than one a tenth of the price. But... The four pound helmet is infinitely better than not having one at all.

I think that you can get a pc program that would enable you to add helmets to the video.

But seriously the others are right. I'd hate to get knocked unconscious on a rope by a falling piece of slate kicked from above. Good one for taking it on board though.

Throw the pic up Ed, and the one of the fungus growing on the blood too. I always like to see that one.

🙂

hey
my two pence worth goes something like this:

folks moan when youths hang around unwanted places and will unfortunately moan when they find something constructive to do.
i agree with the helmet issue 100%, guess there's ways to tell people though!!!

i had my second ever trip in this place and its had me hooked for life! When i first stared i didn't have the cash for all the fancy gear but took a calculated risk and went for it anyway.

Such a shame there CAN be snobbery amongst us mine/caving folk. i take my hat of to anybody having the courage to research and find mines to explore without joining a club (saying that i'm a member of a club now and it has opened up many doors) After all what is this all about if its not for adventure and exploration!!!! just best to do it as safely as possible.

great video and thanks to whoever pointed out the authors previous thread as i now know about snakes and ladders which is on the hit list for end of January

Nowt to do with fancy kit or clubs - a cheap builders helmet costs less than a fiver, but will save your head getting smashed in when someone kicks a rock off a ledge. Okay it's not the best and it lacks a chin strap, but it's 90% of the way there.

Hello again darkness, my old friend...

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
