looks like a explosives box, the "pills" would slot in the compartments.

Hard to be sure of the scale, but could be for electric detonators. Dividers for different delays. There would be no need to keep sticks of explosive separate.

That's what we thought it was when we found it... it was in the Magazine at that time.

It looks a bit like it has been a powder tin that has been modified for use as a det box. Note the shape is rounded and the square separators don't really fit.
The lock seen on the front is the type that is usually found on powder tins (cans or bags). It is opened with the same handle that is used to fire shots with an older type battery.
Detonators were usually transported in something with more of a lock and normal key arrangement for slightly better security.
The lock shown in the photo can be opened by a glancing blow on something like a girder edge or tub edge.

Well spotted Les,

As you say ,that is a lock off a Powder Tin,opened with a Little Demon type key,Det boxes were usually Leather, well the ones i was used to,reckon i need new specks.

Only thing, its not as deep as usual Powder Tins,ie 2 1/2lb sticks high.

I think everyone's right. I've seen both styles in use at the same pit. The last cross measure drift I worked in, firing (I think) wedge cut, the deputy used one like this.
