Probably inexpensive softwood was used when the restoration was done. This coupled with no maintenance & weather.
Needs re-doing.
Are CADW & The Snowdonia National Park aware of the problem?

What body is actually responsible for the wheel and rods? CADW & The Snowdonia National Park mentioned - but who'd be the first port of call to mention this to?

They have just rotted. Unfortunately soft wood was used for the restoration of the rods. No vandalism!

I'm not sure when the restoration work was done (1970s?) - but it's quite possible that the 'new' flat rods have survived at least as long as the original rods did when the mine was working.

Good point Dave. I didn't realise the restoration was that far back.

My memory says that that Plas Tan Y Bwlch did the work when they were running the Slate / Industrial Arch. courses.
I have a note of visiting in 1990 to see the restored wheel, so now 30yrs of exposing softwood to Snowdonia climate!

Instead of talking will anyone take responsibility and report the deterioration to the powers that be?

Have sent CADW an email, will update the thread as and when I hear anything (entirely possible others have contacted them as well I guess).

Received a couple of emails from CADW today. The information about the flatrods has been forwarded onto the Snowdonia National Park archaeologist.

If I get any more information I'll post it up.

The rods were replaced at the time that work was done on the wheel 25-30 years ago. They did not stand the test of time due to untreated timber being used. Further work was carried out in replacement of the rods not many years ago, but it would seem that no lessons were learnt, The rods were given a surface coat of a bitumen compound but would have been better off if given treatment with preservative under pressure. I guess the same old excuse of "not enough cash available" would be the reply.
