We were mooching around Blaenau today and tried to get up to Nyth-y-Gigfran. Access via the miner's zig-zag path is blocked off by a gate and security signs...it looks blocked off at the top, too. It's impossible to gain access from the incline...we tried!
has anyone been up there recently and if so, how did you get up there?? Perhaps it might be possible from the Cwmorthin side...
Thanks!
If the phone didn''t ring, it was probably me.

i *think* Nyth-y-Gigfran is just inside of public access land if you come in from the Cwmorthin side of the hill. There's not a massive amount to see; a few hundred yards of tunnel, some small chambering; and some strange leftovers of a film set in there. The view down to Blaenau from the adit is well worth it though.

Thanks very much, guys. I have since looked on Google Earth and it does look possible from Cwmorthin as you say, Simon.

Llion, the incline fron Rhiw was blocked at the bottom with security fencing and a notice about trespassing, and it was blocked off by a tall fence at the top. The actual Nyth-y-Gigfran incline became too hairy near the top without ropes etc!!

Thanks again guys

Best way up there is up thru Cwmorthin.
Some features on the 1990's film 'First Knight' was made at Nyth-Y-Gigfran. I remember when the painted polystyrene walls were more intact.
When you come out at the end of the adit you will find yourself at a platform with a magnificent view, that is if there is no fog and rain.
The bottom half of the entry to the adit has been partly blocked with a digger a few years ago so you have to concentrate on locating it.

Ahhhhhh! That was where it was shot, was it?

If you know where to look, you'll spot a young Vanoord in First Knight ๐Ÿ˜‰

Look for a short piece of fishbelly rail - it's just outside the partally blocked adit
