To anyone going to Moel Fferna, I would really appreciate seeing some photos of the buildings that are still standing. I was born in the area and my family is buried in Glyndyfrdwy (my grandfather worked at the quarry). Over the years, up until the 1970’s, I made trips to the quarry and took photographs and made sketches, cataloguing the decay of the site. I now live in America and so have only access through the photos that I see uploaded; sadly there are very few of the actual buildings. So if anyone out there is able to get me some updates of what it looks like now I would be really grateful; as many as you can. Thanks

Thanks, I was interested in your photo (5519) I've enclosed a shot that I took in the late 1960's from a similar angle that showed a building still standing[UserPostedImage]

I have added a few that I took last May.

Off topic a bit, but what area of the US do you call home now?

Hi Matsorjc, do you still have any of the early photos you took of the site? they'd be very interesting to see, could you could upload/scan them? :flowers:
thanks!!

I have ended up just outside Washington DC (since 1994), nothing in the way of quarries in the area, but I would like to head up north to explore some of the areas in Pennsylvania which did have a very rich mining community. I think there is an area which still has a Welsh settlement and I believe that the local chapel still gives Welsh lessons once a month.

Sadly, the house that we lived in London (our last home in the UK before moving to the USA) had flooding problems. I was using the basement as a darkroom and all of my negatives were ruined by a flash flood. I have one other shot that I will try and dig out, other than the one that I have already put up.
Which is why I am relying on anyone out there to update me on the above ground state of the site at the moment. I would really like detailed shots of the buildings, etc. before they totally collapse, as I find the above ground details more interesting.

there was a local book written about the quarry in the early 70's I have only ever seen one copy but I'm sure that contained a number of surface and underground shots

and just to add shouldn't this read as Moel Fferna slate quarry which referws to surface and underground slate workings

The mine/quarry nomenclature debate is a long and tortuous one, usually with no resolution!
