Just to prove to people that it really has snowed in North Wales this year and we're not all complaining about nothing...

Last Friday...

Capel to Nantgwryd

A very intrepid foreign couple in a hired Renault Clio just about visible... I think they gave up on the idea of going up the Llanberis Pass.

It was a great couple of days. I shall get around to uploading the photos tomorrow.

The icicles melted a lot even in the course of the day we were in Rampgill. Unless it's gone colder again (it has in N Wales) I think you might be out of luck 😞

They make the drifts we had on Sheldon moor last month look like a mere dusting!

AR and Iclok - you should have seen Magpie in the winter of 1963 too! Extremely bad, but everyone managed to get there every weekend, this was in the pre-fire days of the Mine Manager's house (the interior of which was burnt down in 1966, hence transferring afterwards to living in the Smithy until the cottage was refurbished) and it sure was primitive living in those days with a triplex grate and back boiler sited in the kitchen/dinning room - the site of which is the present posh lounge. Some members I recall from memory were Mike Smith, Luton Geoff and his gang from Luton, the Luffs, "Fred" & his girlfriend Sue and Mike Gill (Icarus) on his motorbike - whom I remember pushing along the lane to the main road for him to bump start it! All my ex-No.2 had was a Morris Minor Traveller in which was carried a shovel, old sacking and a bag of grit (and his Boxer dog Trigger), we always got through (with me and other passengers pushing) even on the Ashbourne/Buxton road where the drifts were horrendous. Sadly no photographs as I was too poor to afford a camera and film in those long forgotten happy days.

I lived at the top of Bonsall in the bad winter of 1978/79 at the time Adrian's excellent nostalgic photos of Magpie were taken. The road from Bonsall through to Winster was blocked by a hugh snowdifts, there was a snowdrift 14 feet high at Upper Town it completely covered the front of a small cottage, and my kids built an igloo. I shiver to think about it.

Mmmmm

Here are a couple of shots of a drilling programme in the snow at -25 in Bulgaria. Fun when the wireline gets brittle and keeps snapping !

I was working on my Class 87 locomotives on tanker trains in Bulgaria in the mountains at similar temps -22 to -27 some nights.... makes work very very difficult.... our bloody compressors kept freezing up, air pipes froze.... and so on, even some brake blocks just crumbled when we tried to free up wagon break rigging etc, even worse temps with the windchill at times!!! You have my sympathies ... BRRRRRRR :surrender: Mind you the trains ran... imagine that here!!!

Looks like there've been some impressive icicles this year in Masson and Rutland caverns: http://news.bbc.co.uk/local/derby/hi/people_and_places/nature/newsid_9345000/9345087.stm
