Quote:

Heritage body Cadw says it has listed a former mines rescue station near Wrexham "with immediate effect" because it is under threat.

Demolition work had started on the 1913 building on Wednesday but was stopped by Wrexham council, saying a safety certificate was needed.

Cadw has now listed the rescue station for its "special historic interest".

Campaigners have been trying to preserve the rescue station and had called for it to be listed by Cadw.

Whatever ones view on this issue it seems strange that the building was listed after the democratic planning procedure was followed, am I missing something?

There is a facility in the relevent act of Parliament (can't quote title off top of head) that allows a local council to issue a buildings preservation order. This is a temporary order to stop buildings under threat being demolished while the relevent body (EH, CADW or the on in Scotland) decides if a building should be listed. I was only reading the act in full about 10 days ago so I know that procedure is in it. I wonder why the local council didn't issue one for this site?

Found the relevent act.

http://www.opsi.gov.uk/acts/acts1990/ukpga_19900009_en_1

Section 3 is the bit dealing with temporay notices.

Note:- this is the version with all current amendments. There for it reads as applying only to England. The reason for this is the powers have since been transferred to WAG for buildings in Wales, so the same powers still exist in Wales (and Scotland).

Thanks for the info, knew I'd missed something. 🙂 I'm not going to speculate on what may happen next based on my experience with two similar issues in South Wales.

We where at the rescue station yesterday taking photos of the front before going to the Crusaders game. About 20 safety stewards came down from the Racecourse Ground for a look. They where all upset about what had happened, some had relatives that had died in the Gresford explosion. They all would like it rebuilt and possibly used for education purposes. :curse: :curse:

Heard on the radio yesterday, that the Miners Welfare has been sold,to be used as a Mosque.

Was`nt this building suitable as a Museum

The institute is in the centre of Wrecsam, there is very little parking and there is no outside room for large static displays. A museum at Bersham is a far better prospect.
Just going slightly off topic when Bersham was working there was a plan to go after Hafod Colliery reserves both from Bersham and a new drift from the site of the tip. A large portion of the tip would have been moved to make room for the new surface facilities.

Seems someone grew a spine. He usually does what he wants with no repercussions.

I read that as a fine for doing it, I assume he will now have to make good at his own cost?

Yup, has to be restored to pre-demolition condition.

Very odd, that's only a few days after the previously reported article saying he'd been fined and started work to restore it. 😢
