Does anyone have any photos of Foel (Moel Siabod Slate Quarry) they can post ? - Although I was involved in the dig at Pont Cyfyng, and did manage one walk around Rhos which is bit higher up a bit later, I never got up to Foel so would appreciate some idea of what was/is up there.

Cheers everyone.

Thanks Andy, I was about to start looking through my photos because I've taken a few snaps on the way through when waking up Moel Siabod - but your pics show it a lot better than mine do
my orders are to sit here and watch the world go by

...and thanks to to Gwyn for his contributions - I can almost smell the mountain air and hear the wind over the heather.... wish I wasn't stuck here in the office...

I have to second that - Gwyn's photos shows the unusual alignment of the wheel pit to the mill far better than mine did.

Thanks. Foel had been on my "to do" list for some time and yesterday was the day. The light went "milky", because of high cloud, after mid-morning.
A fascinating site. One thing that struck me was how little lime mortar, if any, was used in the construction of any of the buildings. When it was used, it appears to have been as an internal render.
The site appears subject to some continuing disturbance, both by human and sheep.
I found all the lichens that I was expecting!

Gwyn, according to 'The Gazeteer' there are the possible remains of a horse whin - did you see anything of that ilk?

I have to admit that I didn't look at the Gazeteer before going up there. It was only later, when uploading the pictures, that I had a quick look at the Foel entry, in preparation for anotation.
Yes, I did notice an area at the NE. edge of the pit that might indicate a whim. I didn't photograph it, if only because it would have been one of those "so what?" pictures.
In that same area there is a culvert that goes under the turbine/wheel supply incline. I'm guessing that this culvert supplied the sand saws. It is built in the style of what we call a "Roman drain" and the threshold, base slab has SD, or DS inscribed into it. I'll put a couple of pictures, in awhile, into the album, although they're not very good.

Ha! Just like you I checked the Gazeteer after visiting. There were a couple of things at Rhos (I also visited that day) that I should have kept an eye out for.

Gwyn I see you've had a mooch at Pont Cyfyng - funny place isn't it? Thanks for posting the photos! Hasn't changed much in all these years, though if anything, it looks less overgrown!

John Knight (who occasionally drops in to Aditnow) - thanks for your contribution to my request about Foel as well, too! (And in case I forget to write.)

I must get up there myself some time,..... now if only someone would fund my retirement.....

Cheers all

What is the best way to go up to Foel?

Dylan, I park up at Bryn Glo (SH73615710) and walk a short distance back up the A5 and cross over Pont Cyfyng onto the "back road". After about 100M. there's a road that takes off to the right, uphill, over a cattle grid. That's the public footpath up to Rhos and Foel quarries, as well as Moel Siabod.
Rhos quarry is private (despite the stiles, erected at no small public expense) so if you want to visit, drop in at Rhos Farm and ask for permission. The land beyond the mountain gate and wall is open public access. Basically, follow the path in a SW direction and you'll find Foel!

Graham, my pleasure, thanks for bringing it to my attention.
When on site I couldn't work out how it could have been powered by water from the Llugwy. It looked much more like it was powered by the waters coming off the Rhos watershed. Funny? Yes! Funny peculiar!
