Hi everyone, this is my first post, but I have been lurking around for a while...

I wondered if anyone had info in the Lliwedd copper mine. I was up there last week and ventured some way into the bottom adit, but was reluctant to go too deep as I've no idea how safe it is. Further up there's a massive open stope/chasm that runs up the hillside with some fairly terrifying drops.

Judging by the amount of old buildings and equipment up there I presume the mine was a reasonable size, but I haven't been able to find much info online about it. Anyone know much about it?

Thanks

D.E.Bick "The Old Copper Mines of Snowdonia", 1st & 2nd eds, Newent, 1982 & 1985 (more or less the same), pp.76-78; 3rd ed, Ashbourne, 2003 (additional photos), pp.94-97, provides a useful summary history and description of surface remains.

Unfortunately some of the remains there have suffered since I first went there have suffered greatly from vandalism/ the weather. For instance there was a nice end-tipping tram at the mouth of the deep adit, which a few years later was smashed up in the stream further down the valley. Unfortunately never managed to get any worthwhile photos at the time. Last time I was there was in really foul weather, when the workings were taking a huge amount of water; any attempt to descend some of the connecting stopes/winzes would have been suicidal.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
