so was steam produced by filling boiler with water and heating it with a fire under neath and steam was then some how used as a power force?.

It is over 10 years since I have been inside Minllyn. But if I remember correctly there is the remains of a steam powered ram in the water which would have pushed the jib upwards so as to lift.
And there must have been some kind of locking mechanism on the jib to stop it coming down after the lifting stage was completed.
It would have been a hell of a place to be when the crane was working with the fumes and the probable risk of burning from the boiler and pipes etc. Even with a piped flue (chimney) there would have been a lot of smoke in there. Very strange, but interesting to see this impement in the mine when a hand operated geared down winch would have worked fine and with less problems.
But you have to say the smell of coal and steam, just like an old Gardener powered ERF does have a wonderfull smell doesn't it???

yes would have loved to have been there maybe there may be some old photos a few of the workers may have taken showing it in action,or may be not. if you now of any more good mines in dinas mawddwy north wales area please let me know. thanks.

oh, the old 'roar of the greasepaint, the smell of the crowd'??

speedway does it for me... methanol, Castrol R and wet shale on a frosty evening...... grasstrack racing, even better!! dope, oil and fresh-cut grass....

Would this have been the type of crane used? Perhaps a steam engine worked an air compressor hence the boiler.

I think that's the type of crane that was used were high pressure water service was available. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_Hydraulic_Power_Company)

Could be used if a steam engine/Ram pump combination was used.

Edit: Having said that a mill I worked at had water powered hydraulic kit operating off the mill water tower at 40 PSI.

Although my knowledge of mine operation is limited I cannot see why a water powered crane could not be used uderground, they had the motive power.

Looking at the photo you can see the lift ram in the water inside the chamber.

All this talk reminds me of how much I would really love to eat a plate full of egg and Chips deep fried in lard like my grandmother used to make. Once would not hurt would it!

Stop Stop !! I had my cholesterol blood test results this week. I mustn't be tempted b b... by the L word if I want to read any long books or watch a TV series! 😢
