Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act. 1990.
Application ref. CO8A/0677/15/CR
Replace existing Dinorwic slate cladding with Penrhyn slate cladding. Bryn Eirin, Fron Goch, Llanberis.

Vindication, at last, for the quality of Penrhyn slate? 😉

Or perhaps due to the fact that nobody is producing slate at Dinorwig these days? (Leastways, not as far as I know they're not.)

I suppose it's an interesting concept that a lot of buildings which are clad or roofed in Dinorwic slate can't be re-roofed as there's no supply of it.

In some cases, this is going to require a planning application to get permission to change the building.

I wonder if there may be a future market for Dinorwic slate, if someone could reclaim enough from the tips... :bored:

I think it's quite telling, and good to see, that the distinction (i.e. implied difference in texture and colour) is actually mentioned. Rather than simply "re-clad xyz".

Guys... genuine question, was there an actual grading system within the old slate industry for slates say in surface finish, colour and so on..... its crossed my mind a number of times how mines/quarries competed.. or was it just price?

I am not quite so sure about between quarries, but certainly each quarry had different colours and grades for different slates. For instance "best", "seconds" etc. The colours came into it too. Some were quite amusing such as "best stripey". Sometimes the actual vein was referred to in th grading too.
