It is an interesting mine but watch out - the water is very acidic. We tested a pH of 1.5 from some roof drips and it takes apart stitches on boots, clothing etc. Apart from that it's an interesting example of a pillar and stall working where a 12ft thick bedded pyrite deposit has been formed close to an igneous intrusion. There's also a very large bacteria colony consisting of stringy orange mucus-like growths in the water.

Yeah, Parys Mountain rotted my bootlaces and this looks very similar.

Fortunately you don't need that sort of kit in Cae Coch. But if you did I think you'd have to seriously think about replacing your harness if it came into contact with the water for any length of time.
By the way - a mate reckons the water is a good cure for athlete's foot.

Parys mine ate my camera, and last time it ate my tripod. Would like to visit Cae Coch but I'm disinclied to take any photo kit :lol: :lol:

If I go here I'll probably take my 'cheaper' camera; the video makes the place look real interesting so I am quite tempted to visit...

Does anyone know if a map or survey of the mine exists?

I did one about 25 years ago. If you send me a pm of your address I'll send you a photocopy. It was in the Teifi Valley Caving Group journal no 2.

That surface plan is from the book mentioned above (and is credited to Robe Vernon, one of the authors of the book, on the Sub-Brit site). The book also has surveys of the underground workings.

Not sure about etiquette of reviving 10 year old thread - however...

Was up there yesterday. Explored the incline, then had an interesting time negotiating fallen trees on the track from the top to the mine. Pleasant underground visit, inappropriately dressed in shorts and trainers.

But the interesting thing was on the way down. There's a big landslide, and the material looks quite 'orey', maybe reminiscent of a hush. It's over twenty years since I was last there, so, it's relatively recent.

According to the survey, I think the lower adits are below it, but I did wonder if it's mine related.

I was mooching around there last year. I found what looked like the location of a lower adit heavily blocked with various and sundry cr*p. If memory serves it was making water.

The only bit of the mine I got into was the top section with the rather impressive cave like entrance which which I accessed via the incline head followed by lats of scrambling over and under fallen trees.

If you haven't done it it is well worth following the tramway formation from the head of the incline to the quarry.
