Is there a confusion between Maenofferen and Cwmorthin here?

Maenofferen is private property and some parts of the wider site (the waste tips) are still being worked. Although there are footpaths near Maenofferen and these are used by locals for dog walking and so on, the buildings themselves and indeed most of the site are not publicly accessible.

There have been some considerable problems with vandalism and theft at Maenofferen and this has resulted in considerable damage and degradation to what is a very rare location. It is, therefore, entirely understandable that the owners, Greaves, wish to keep people away.

Cwmorthin, however, remains an ongoing project to retain access and in particular work has been carried out to repair the entrances.

Work weekends are held at Cwmorthin from time to time and there will no doubt be some held next year - details will be posted on this site by Friends of Cwmorthin, who hold the access agreement.

Similarly, there may well be a "beginners" trip to Cwmorthin arranged in the spring, if there is demand.
Hello again darkness, my old friend...

I note that Lady Belinda had altered the title of her post to read "Cwmorthin" so presumably it is to that mine she referred. Maybe it would have been better posted in a Cwmorthin thread!

When I first read 'Lady Belinda's ' words 'helping out with work' I thought at first she had perhaps applied for a job at Maen.
But It would seem that it was meant for Cwmorthin.

I made my annual visit to Maenofferen a couple of weeks ago. And things had degenerated from a year before. Notably all doors have been kicked in, which I do not remember before.

What is more, several wagons, have been pushed outside:

I only fully realised this when I checked my May 09 photos with my May 08 ones. Then the incline man cart, and the wagon behind it, were in the main mill. Furthermore the man cart is now more damaged than it was a year ago. :curse:

I bring this up because if a group is passing by the Maenofferen mills, they may consider pushing these carts back in again.
Been injured while at work and are not to blame?

Get over it.

I just cannot get over how mind blowing those pictures of Maenofferen are on here... some of the best underground pictures I have ever seen!

[tweak]Hope you don't mind - but I've bumped this post up to PU level since all the underground pics at Maenofferen are PU level (private property). This post will therefore be visible to PU members, but not to others - srl[/tweak]

It really has gone downhill in the past year hasn't it 😞 Those slab wagons and the man rider seem to get pushed out occassionally, and then pushed back in. Forunately there is a large boulder over the adit preventing them being pushed down the incline.

The roof has attracted the attention of vandals and, very sadly, the switchgear of scrap hunters.

I was up there showing someone the mills two months ago, they were all inside then. Am glad Erwyn put that little stone there otherwise I have no doubt they would have gone for one final journey by now.

does anybody know what is going to happen to these buildings ,it is a shame to see idiots destroying it .

They are all listed buildings, which means they cannot be demolished by the owners, only local chavs! Grants would be unobtainable as they are not open to public access. Acyually there is a way that could be acheived and Greaves would gain too, but doubt they would be interested.

Having checked dates, it was nearer 3 months ago I was up there.

That would radically alter the place. Anything that was done would need listed building consent.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
