Can anybody tell me the location of this mine as it looks very much like somewhere I look around in my youth. The one I am thinking about is at 'Happy Valley' just down the road from Tywyn and Aberdovey, am I right?

Thanks,
Bruce.

Yes, you're right it's in Cwm Maethlon (Happy Valley).

Yes you are correct. The generator building was in use as a sort of garage and last time I looked had been renovated and was up for sale. The deep adit is open to a fall at engine shaft which is blocked at about 25 feet, there is an open shaft at the back which I have not descended as I now have a fair idea of what gets dumped into these places.

Thanks, I thought it looked like it, I always wanted to explore the adit but never did as I was wearing full cycle racing gear at the time!.. I used to live in Tywyn twenty plus years ago and used Happy Valley as a training run. I used to cycle up the climb from the other end of the Valley, I can remember cycling up and down that climb ten times in a row, god how fit I was then!
Roy, what would be down that shaft now?

Forgot to ask, if the garage is for sale, does that include the mine?.....i know you need to get things below ground, but seems interesting.........

I am not sure about the exact situation.
If you really want to know, post the question on Miles's site for attention of Simon H.
Simon Hughes posts on there and he will know.
Failing that, I will ask him this weekend, as I stay there every Saturday night.
Thinking about it, it would be an interesting target for one of my projects, depending on the extent of the adit workings and possible backs. The fall at the engine shaft could easily be spiled through, and there is the flooded understope right outside to dump into. I would not be inclined to descend the shaft at the back as its almost certainly blocked a short distance down, and probably with the most revolting material. I once had a bad experience in the Lake District this way. To your list of mine gasses, CO2, H2S etc you can add 'dead sheep gas'.
For those who have not been following the Talybont project, my friends and I have driven a whopping 120 feet through collapsed ground at almost full walking height. We have also now started a new project, location 'secret' while work ongoing.
We really have it to a fine art.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
