Hi all , having researched my family history i've discovered my ancestors were lead miners at Llangynog , i was wondering if any members have any info or pics of lead mining in that area or know of the best place to find out about it . The publications i've come across so far relate to mining in other parts of the country or different minerals . I would be grateful for any ideas or info .

Hi Biggles95

There are a few people registered on here from the Welsh Mines Society who might be able to help. I'm sure if anybody has any relevant info they'll reply here.
my orders are to sit here and watch the world go by

There is a book that deals with the Tanat Valley, it's railway and industry. That might be of help.

There's also some documentation in the County Archive at Llandrindod Wells.

Hi. I’ve been down one of the lead mines in Llangynog. It goes down about 100m or more. I don’t think many have managed it

The two books to get are these, although they're well out of print.

The Tanat Valley - Its Railways & Industrial Archaeology by Wilfred J Wren. David & Charles 1968

The Old Mines of the Llangynog District by Alan Williams
British Mining No. 26 NMRS 1985

I visited Maengwynedd aka Cwm Maengwynedd last year. Nice walk up with a reservoir and drumhouse to see, and 'sort of' underground remains.

I visited Powys Castle at Welshpool today and learned the Herbert family owned Llangynog district mines. All this is written in detail in British Mining no. 26.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
