I have only been to the opencast mines once. I hope to go underground there soon.

Forgive my base ignorance, please. But why is it a Cornish engine house?

Presumably it is of a type oft used in Cornwall?

High pressure Cornish steam engines and boilers.

This remarkable example of British technological dynamism laid the foundation for Cornwall’s world-class export market in mining equipment, particularly the Cornish engine. The building 'houses' the engine.

Is this the same design as at Dorothea?

Aha! A house for a Cornish engine, rather than a Cornish engine-house :)

I have never been to Dorothea, so I can't comment.

the one at Dothea(?) is the same and it still has the engine in place with the boilers the only diffance would be the size depending on the cylinder size also a winding engine would have loadings (walls) at the front for the flywheel and drums :smartass:

Anybody know who you need to get in touch with in order to have a look inside the Dorothea engine house? I've seen pics somewhere - possibly penmorfa.com (can't recall).
