You know that big crane at the bottom of the pass (road goes past it). This one:

http://www.mine-explorer.co.uk/view_picture.asp?id=6001

It's gone, at least it wasn't there last night. It was a scheduled monument so legally protected, and the new roadworks had put in protection for it so it wasn't damaged.

But as I drove past last night, it wasn't there.

Maybe it's be temporarily lifted out whilst they work there?

Hopefully it has been removed for safety during the ongoing work.
IF it proves for any other reason then I shall be interested to hear why.

Well I'm not too worried because I'm pretty sure that was one of the most protected monuments in Welsh Mining. I suspect it's just been temporarily moved for it's own safety during the works.

Of course, if it's been run over by a 20 ton digger for scrap wood to make pencils...

Perhaps there were health and safety issues. After all it could have fallen over and injured someone had they been in the vicinity. The cost of propping it up would have been detrimental to Greaves and would probably have put them out of business. 😉

I was told last night that it had been decided to remove it after all due to likely damage from the construction of the road (or construction of the temporary road not sure which).

Are You Guys going to "Blockade" Mcalpine's for removing this without your say-so?!

Don't bug McAlpins, they've already had to close one quarry. No... I think if something of the sort was to happen, then making a complaint would be easier... but before you ask no, I don't live in wales. 😉

Thanks for uploading some Foty pics by the way.

Of course not. As the crane was legally protected I'm sure there was a good reason to move it and that it will be put back. Otherwise it's down to the authorities.

By the way, the right for a group of like-minded people to make peacful demonstrations so others might hear their message, if they feel there is wrong doing being done somewhere, is a cornerstone of democracy. That might be a rally in London against invading Iraq, or it might be lorry drivers blocking ports to demonstrate against petrol prices. Or us so called mine-explorers complaining about our history being destroyed with a digger.

Its a right we all have, if we choose to us it, and that's a very good thing.

Good point Miles, there's no harm in trying to do something to get a messge through. It doesn't really imply that we're going to mean about it.

Is there any more news on this John?

I have just spoken to GCC, Planning, Dolgellau. He confirmed it is Grade 2 listed. He was unaware of any authorisation to move/remove the crane. He will visit the site later today. He was somewhat taken aback that no application had been made to move/remove it.

I have had a phone call from GCC, Planning, Dolgellau. He has spoken to conservation officer, who has in turn spoken to "highways". There are aware the crane has been moved. It has been put into safe storage (didn't say where). It will be replaced on the wharf (BUT IN A SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT POSITION) on completeion of the road works.

Cheers John, that's good news.

I wonder what DylanW meant when he said "won't see that again" - probably just trying to wind us up 😉

I think most of what he said was to try and wind us up. He didn't succeed in my case! "It is better to keep your mouth shut and let everyone think you are an idiot, rather than open it and prove it!!" :guns:

Yes, I did phone GCC, as a result of it's disappearence, not your comment about it not being seen again! Besides, what are you doing online at 10.00 on a working day at Llechwedd? Shouldn't you be working to pay your mortgage, utility bills, etc?
