Just in case anybody missed it, George Hall spoke on Open Country on Radio 4 last week about gold mining around Dolgellau. Here is a http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/factual/opencountry.shtml  to the BBC's listen again page.

After the initial embarrasment of listening to radio 4, this was good listening, any ideas where the bat tunnel is???

Not at the moment. Need to find out. The river Eden is the one that flows down past the Coed-y-Brenin visitor Centre and down to join the Mawddach in Ganllwyd.

I'd love to find out!

p.s. What's wrong with Radio 4?!!!

Yhe bat tunnel, as discribed, does sound familliar but i cant see it being the one i am thinking about.

One that has recently been gated to prevent people from disturbing the bats is Cefn Coch (New California) Gold Mine but that overlooks the Mawddach above the Ty'n Y Groes Hotel.

I don't know of any in the valley north of Ganllwyd - I'll have to get Morrison's book out.

The key things were quoted as:
Gated
Next to a stream (sounded more like a river or fall)
Portal 2 to 3 foot wide (quite narrow)
Ankle deep water
Otters live there

I bet that the bat fans read these mine exploration sites and panic if we get too close - Relax, we wont do anything wrong, If the bats were scared they would all ****** off!

When Otters Attack!

Lordy, that nice wildlife lady sounded sooooo dull! So what if the otters are eating bats?

I suspect the last time I was in ******* mine, I probably shouldn't have spent a couple of minutes trying to (flash) photograph a bat that was flying around the chamber, should I? 😞

Then Dull lady wouldn't have any to count! Whats more, the otters wouldn't have any food and might eat her instead! 😉

Have just located this news item on BBC. I know it is a couple of years old but still gives some relevent info.

In this news report is a picture of quite a distinctive adit, narrow, as dull bird states. Anyone recognise it?

I'm sure that's Cefn Coch (California) Gold Mine. When they say they've close 20 mines do you think they mean 20 adits?

Although its very brief, its given me something to think about ....

My photo of the bats has nothing to do with Gwynfynydd, in fact it nowhere near there!

Good good, better not to mention where it is ;)

They seem to have flown into the ceiling and gone splat, poor things. That's why old mines shouldn't be locked up, better to keep bats out in case they come to harm like these two have.
