I am crossing the great divide this weekend from Devon to Cornwall, going to re visit Truro museum for the minerals saturday Am, but can anyone suggest some off the beaten track places to look at? Surface stuff fine, St Just, Camborne, Redruth. Calciners or engine houses which aren't trashed or over restored would be great? Not looking to get underground unless anyone is up for some light exploring, or having a walk at surface? Cheers Tony.;D
Getting underground, zero impact, zero politics.

Go have a good mooch around Cot Valley, St Just. Apart from the mining bits and old mill its a natural garden.

Wheal Busy at Chacewater is worth a look - close to Truro. In the same (ish) area Poldice also interesting.

and while in St Just explore the other great moochy valley, Kenidjack and check out the great Wheal Call wheelpit and see if you can spot the flat rod run through its little tunnel.

I would leave the car in St just and do the whole lot on foot, you got Wheal Owles to see as well

Do not miss Botallack. Not just the usual Crowns section but further east around Skip Shaft with its stand on if you dare grill.
poke around long enough and you'll find something..

I went to a Parish council meeting to object to the proposed tailings dams that Mt Wellington wanted to build. I pointed out the rich and unique history that was certainly going to be lost by allowing the application to proceed.
Blank faces all around and the dams were built anyway.
It seems that the PC were offered 'sweeteners' in return for a positive outcome.
I think I have a document somewhere with the whole story.
(Buried in my deep litter archive 😞 )

I went to this site years ago before I was into mining history, parked at the engine house with the pond in front, great, then crossed the road. Was not expecting the bloody big hole! there were lots of shafts with mesh covers but one recently capped shaft with I think a plaque naming the shaft, cant remember the name. 🙂
