http://www.aditnow.co.uk/mines/Florence-Iron-Mine/

Specifically anything relating to whether a Joseph Rowe who died in his 80s in 1936 had worked there (family connection), plus any general history and archive photographs.

Can anybody help?

Thanks :flowers:

If he worked at Florence in 1936 it won't be the recently abandoned one (No. 2)- that dates from 1940. Old Florence (No. 1, 1914) was about a quarter mile south (between the two roads to Haile). No. 2 was sunk as No. 1 had for some reason been sunk right into the middle of a fairly good orebody and they wanted to get it out.

Thank you for your very quick response. Yes, please, put me in touch with any link which could bear fruit.
Grandad died in 1937 (I said, erroneously 1936) age 80+.
We come from Hayle in Cornwall - what a co-incidence to read of "Haile"
and my moniker on aditnow is "exHayle"

Hi folks,
The person who would definitely know the info you need is the former secretary of the now defunct West Cumberland Mines Historical Society.
Dave Banks.

John, i've sent those details you posted to exHayle in a PM.

Putting someone name, phone number and address on a public internet forum may lead to all sorts of nasty side effects for them.

Hi Chris,
Glad to hear that you have done so!
Have known Dave for many, many years and I thought hard about releasing his personal details but I am absolutely certain that he would only be too pleased to help and I cannot for the life of me seeing him object.
The only pity is that he does not seem to contribute to this site but maybe others know better!

Thanks for all the info and pointers. Hopefully exHayle will find something out as a result of it. Appreciated.
