Thanks for that Colin, I hope that it looks better than that monstrosity in Fore St Redruth. 😠

Well it's better than the massive white cock that the colliers of St. Helens got.

That's a nice job (Geevor one).

The white cock is quite subtle, I'm not getting the message. (rather like the angel of the north aka man with a plank)

The message I got was the laughter from a French sculptor who was a million quid better off as a result.

Maybe I'm just an uncultured miserable old sod. People see what they want to see in art. With this example, I just see a massive white cock. Says a lot about me I suppose!

When I was at university, there was a chap who got paid several tens of thousands to put a big chalk cylinder in the Tees IIRC. The idea being that it would gradually erode and the associated reasoning was a part of this artist's art. There was "hell up". He said "As long as it's controversial, it's art". In the same vein, we were going to go down there and blow it up, for the sake of our freedom, it's a good thing that idea didn't get beyond the pub!

There was someone talking about art on a BBC TV program the other day, she said "art is index linked to desirability"

So it seems...get the desirability going in someone or a committee and yer auntie's yer uncle as they say down west.

Dad always used to bang on about "art" being the demonstration that the artist knew the exact point to stop whatever they were doing.

The redruth miner falling into the shaft should have stopped at the idea stage.

I got to thinking which is the worst mining memorial you have seen , The Friends of Agecroft colliery first built this, which was great

http://www.ivmp.org.uk/image-gallery/1

But then they added this

http://www.ivmp.org.uk/image-gallery/8

Which was not , an old bike wheel would be more realistic

wtf! A run of house bricks and a bit of flat bar? What kind of a worthy testament is that?

I know it's really bad
To be fair they intend to put a memorial on the site of every pit along the Irwell valley , and the ones I've seen are pretty good , but that spoils the one next to it any old industrial cog or fly wheel would have been better
Astley Green mining museum a few miles away have spare sheave wheels just leaning against the Engine house , I would have asked them if they had anything better lying around

I've never seen the Redruth statue until now, and having seen a picture, I can't say I'm sorry.

I've never had any idea what the "Angel of the North" was intended to represent, and that white thing passes me by completely.

plus ca change, plus c'est le meme chose

depends if they've had stuff go missing before, that might be the right approach. Or forget the wheel and just have the proper stone monument!

Saw the Geevor statue today (12/06/15). It is absolutely fabulous. Looks like a miner! Very impressed.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
