Anyone know which is woolfs shaft at United Downs,
I was thinking it might be one of the 2 shafts that I bouldered
just West of cusvy engine house. Despite the fact that I have lived in carharrack for 10 years .i've only just discovered this "to me" new area where the off road cyclists have built various jump ramps. Brave boys, as it would be a trip to RCH if anything went wrong on landing

I think the shaft's you are talking about could be Bailey's.
Woolf's shaft is directly below the Redruth & Chasewater railway line, just before it enters the Hale Mills cutting on the Twelveheads side

Thanks ,Must be quite near the water table then. I'll have a look on my Monday trip to the cycle cafe. Info on the web recons its still open. Could someone tell me the Hamilton Jenkin map number for this area.
I found a couple of shafts in the undergrowth last week just alongside the the road at twelveheads .By layby, I must have past these hundreds of times and never noticed them before.

That is an air vent on the County adit. Woolf's shaft is between that road and the railway.
Walk passed the shaft with the cap towards Hale Mills and take the next turning on the left, that will take you up to the railway.
When you reach the railway turn right, after about 20-25 yards look over the hedge on the right hand side, I don't think Woolf's has a cap on it

It;s not your fault you can't find it. It's the stupid policy of calling every road a tramway they are not!
The Poldice tram ends the St Day side of Poldice about a mile from Woolf's shaft.
All of the shafts on the valley floor are on the County adit.
Follow the directions I gave you and you will find it, just keep looking over the hedge once you have reached the R&C railway.
My directions are based on comming from Twelveheads

Think I found it ,the last bit of the old railway route is very overgrown, I could get a better overveiw from a gateway on the path leading down from the railway route to the twelveheads road . I didn't actually go over to the shaft but its a big one, looks open "although a lot of growth in the middle" I'll take my camera and have a better look next trip. I did have a closer look at the other two shafts in the bottom of the valley nr Hale Mills the most Westerly is blocked with rubble
The other one nearer to Twelveheads is very overgrown may be open can't be sure . What were these lower shafts for then .as there are another two betwean Hale Mills and the County Adit Portal

As far as I know thet are all air vents, roughly about 50 fathoms apart.
Roy M may be able to confirm this.

I found yet another shaft nr Hale Mill,
I must have passed this on loads of time and missed it .
, This shaft is concrete lined at the top with a flat access grill Something like the Ale and Cake shaft further down the valley. water is pouring into it
I wonder what this shaft is about

PM sent ;)

The ale and cakes shaft is actually bread and cheese engine shaft
With b&c footway shaft a few metres east.
Easy to mix up namewise.

I had a closer look at Wool's shaft yesterday. It has a clwd cap and filled with rubble ,I took a picture but I'm afraid that I don't know how to attach it.
I also had a look on the library website/Cornwall centre ,they hold a plan of the county adit ,and something else re adit by Buckley .Ill have a geek ,next trip into Redruth.

Woolf's is open to water without any protection, apart from where it is. If you fell in it, you'd probably just go splash and then have to fumble your way out of the adit (which would be quite traumatic)

Not the shaft i've beeen looking at then. Middle of the field
drecly 😞 opposite the end of the the rideable stretch of tramway to Wl Maid. Seems to correspond to my plan!
I was not really intending falling down it ,but if i did Not far to the adit portal I suppose , Then I would need a key to the gate to get out ******:o

Go to the record office and dig out MRO-R103.

Among all of the awesome sections of the place are some exceedingly interesting plans which show the layout of the whole place, the various cobbing and bucking sheds, the location of engine houses and horse whims. Really fascinating stuff. Looking at these will make the whole place make total sense.

In the winter the adit used to sump out in several places between Woolfs area and the portal, and that was when Carnon were maintaining it. Now without that maintenance I would think its hell in there at this time of year.
