I pinpointed the shaft yesterday ,I must have passed it hundreds of times and not realised its significance. I even had a picture of it from 2005. No luck in finding the adit though.
Seems to have links to another adit to the south of county adit "Roys plan"
Also hard to fall down with 2 layers of protection around shaft
On my way back I had a brief look for Coads shaft, I believe its the second deepest it the area.? if anybody can give me a gps position would help ta .I must have seen it in the past i distinctly remember a shaft with flat metal grill covering it, but can't rember where! Reading about methane in the Coads area its probably good that I don't smoke:wub:

are you familar with "old-maps.co.uk"?

Get on there and have a play. The earliest 1880 ones are pretty good and the later big scale ones have a few craters around the coads area. Coads is deep and was probably a winding shaft. West Virgin Engine shaft is over there somewhere behind a fence and it's a fair old hole. West Virgin, right the way up towards the horse place was stoped to a huge depth. It's where a fair bit of the fortune came from.

Where is Coads shaft in relation to the main Crofthandy to United Downs Rd , Somewhere near the small Wheal Maiden sign I'm told. I'm trying to get my head around some of the plans that RM kindly gave me. these links to the CA are weird.
ill have a look at your suggested ,ta

Interesting stuff, They don't have a clue what or how much or where its going. Only thing missing from the can of worms is Nuclear Waste.

Regarding nuclear anomalies. I would be interesting in confirming the 3^He rumour about the landfill gas.

It's all a bit x files.

If I remember correctly, when the dump site was in its planning stages, time was slipping by and the deadline for the compulsory lining of landfill tips was looming ever closer.
It seems that planning permission was fast tracked to avoid this date and to avoid the colossal expense of fitting a liner and all the necessary bunding etc.
What a saving in the long run!!!!
The term Muppets springs to mind for some reason. ::)

These are interesting. The P 12-13 of the Maid one slings up some shaft names which are not on anything I have.

I haven't had a really good dig yet, but at a glance, they aren't on the consols plans, or the maid, or St Day Utd, or symons, thomas or any of the OS stuff. Possibly one of the MROA sheets.

1. Type "cornwall mapping" into google.

2. Get Cornwall Council link.

3. Select History layer from the left menu.

4. Click "event" on sub-menu

5. Rummage through and open PDf files.

See you in about 6 months. (There is enough to keep an enthusiast busy for weeks)

Would that be in significant quantities or was it just a blip on a sniffer that some lab rat started to freak about? And what about the Tritium?

One source said there was tritium being found. I find this exceedingly hard to believe, due to the half lives. Tritiated Methane and the word "radiogenic" were used.

I'd expect anything with mass 3 to be 3^He which is the breakdown product of tritium.

Legend has it that "nuclear stuff from a very early reactor" found it's way into the tip. I heard the phrase "primary coolant and sludge". This would explain the tritium, but it would have converted into 3^He by now.

Anything generating helium would probably be related to an alien spacecraft and perhaps an alien base being under the dump.

The only way to find out is to take some gas samples from around the dump and get someone to whack 'em in a mass spec. I know someone who can do this, but it's the headache of actually doing it. Big syringes required (new) and then dragging it up to the plimuff polyversity.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
