Have just been informed that entrance '9A' has been closed off by the local council.
Will check the other north end entrances next weekend.
The entrances behind the old rest home have been gated for
a while and permission to enter is doubtfull on past experience.

Hmmm, just been reading some reports on rossendale online about some locals finding the underground lake in there & a group of lads entering scout and coming out in crawshawbooth. Wonder if there is a connection here? Hope they dont seal it off was hoping to go there in a couple of weeks time.

Thats a load of old crap, i've surveyed Scout from one end to the other (see archive map). there isn't even a puddle in the place.
The story of kids getting lost is also junk, two got lost in the coal workings near Grimebridge Colliery (and never found) and three in Facit (eventually rescued).

Will be interesting to see how it has been blocked off. I remember thinking at the time that it wouldn't be easy to seal. And also being surprised that it hadn't been sealed.

from what i've been told, they used a digger and left a very small hole at the top.
apparently the little stream that flowed past the entrance
is no longer flowing, I hope it hasn't been diverted inside!
I'll find out at the weekend, also if entrance '13' is still open.
All the best chas

good to know it is still accesiable, would be a shame if access was lost. 😉

Any chance of a PM (or post on the forum if appropriate) of the O/S grid ref to the entrance please (not the one behind the home) ?

Also ... was it a "sandstone" mine ?

🙂

The grid reference for the start of the footpath to the entrance is SD 835 229, OL21

The entrance is accessible from the public footpath wich comes off Burnley road east. At the bottom off the second lane to the house/old nursing home. Stone steps go up the hill which is the public footpath. if you follow the path up for about 50 metres or so you will see the tracks from the excavator which attempted to fill the entrance in, which is to the left as it heads up the path.

I can upload a few pics if this helps.
