Saw Stuey's post on CBC Facebook page about it. Absolutely bloody awful. Glad you all got out safely and hope you track down the people involved.

I'm wondering how they dropped large rocks in as the vent pipe in the cap is only 4 inches wide. unless of course they were pushing something like sash weights through the hole.
BL***Y IDIOTS! and sending down explosives. I would certainly like to find the culprits. Perhaps people in the cottages up there may have noticed any one or a vehicle driving up there.
It's not a regularly frequented track by anyone other than locals.
I wonder what the smoke smelled like....any clues from that?

That's fe*king aweful! Didyou report it to anyone?

people like that make hobbies miserable for the rest of us, like the eejits who dump cars and washing machines down shafts, it's not a nice sight!

Dunno where this is , but I have seen some shafts in areas where the local inhabitants are possibly to be avoided (thinking some regions around St.Day here, among others) and may take exception to people poking around in case they find something they shouldn't.
Is it safe to come out of the bunker yet?

Agreed. Just my speculation, but immediate local residents sounds like a plausible place to start your 'inquiry'.

There is a network of tracks around that area, the local farmer does take objection to some of the off road crowd using the lane with 4x4s so is a bit territorial.

I have spent quite a bit of time in that area and have noticed a fair amount of crap/litter left in the vicinity of the concrete slab.

The hole is not massive but anything dropped from that height is going to have some force behind it.

That's just crazy - someone could have been killed!

I would agree with all concerned about stuff being deliberately dropped down knowing that there were people down there, rightly or wrongly this is or could be tantamount to attempted murder in the eyes of some.

I think it is would be very wise to take this as a warning. One hopes its a one off, but if they are local then it could happen again. So I would be very careful in the future, I remember people being warned by a local farmer with a shotgun not to go near any of the shafts on his land ! Also make sure that if you do use ropes that they are well hidden and can't be removed as happened in Derbyshire in the past. Its not much fun to come back to the shaft station to find that some ****** has pulled your only way out and is waiting for you on the surface !
If it can't be grown it has to be mined.

Ye gods!!! The consequences don't bear thinking about.

If it was a legit trip call the plod.

In future it might not be a bad idea to leave someone on watch up on surface.

I can pretty well guarantee it wasn't anything to do with locals.
I know quite a few around that area and within the vicinity of the shaft, and all are generally good people. They certainly wouldn't be up for threatening life or limb regardless of what they thought of ME's. It's a strong Methodist community and everyone knows everyone else; No, this is the work of 'outsiders' without a doubt.

They may not be local to the village, but if it is anywhere near the clay district, I have heard of various "groups" that live in the area that are best avoided (Anyone seen Deliverance or Easy Rider?). As stated whoever it was must have seen people arrive and then go "equipped" later on.
If it is in the clay area, you can PM me the location and I can ask around people I know, if this is of any help.

It falls on the border of the Gwennap mining district, so no clay hillbillys.
I went up there this evening to check out the diameter of the vent pipe and it's 6 inches. A lump of tree trunk/branch hammered into the hole would stop any further surprise deliveries. The mine vents perfectly well through the adit so ventilation wouldn't be a problem.
