We recently got a £45 book from the Tylers about Burlington, though it's mainly finantial - but does say something of the parts of the quarry, + a good surface map. 😎 As for the undergrond bits: it gives some infomation on the access tunnels, and the chambers worked to the surface though very briefly. It mentions nothing of the completely underground chambers. One thing that was of interest though is that many of the tunnels were dug by hand, and are thus quite narrow. I thought I remember seeing a narrowish one when walking past... 😉 😉

Talking of books, I got Tylers new one this weekend. Not bad. Full of grid refs & useful info.
I also managed to get a copy of my uncles history of Coniston Copper Mines for £28 which is becoming rarer. Its going for upto £100 second hand on amazon at the moment.

We got dat book...
Very good one, A comprhensive history...
I love his 'Underground-in-furness' 1967 I think...
The book on Burlington is like this...
There is one pic of a chamber, but it doesn't say anything...
We went to Peat Field Quarry, which is operated by Burlington, and has an interesting Diamond saw lying derilict in a shed. We went to look at that massive opened out chamber, only to find it goes nowhere, save a short matt-spedding tunnel... 😉
yer his new book is good, but not much on slate, even though he mentions Gypsum Quarries.

Bit more:
All of Burlington's workings would have been underground, until most of their roofs were removed to make quarries. There are still some workings underground, but most are now blocked, but we'll have a look... and there are still some chambers within the tunnels... as well as a few opened to the surface... which can be seen...

Have just been looking around some of the tipps here, and at the Old Incline. I could see some levels, but they had all been covered in earth and waste. I think I sould ask the farmer for permission to excavate one sometime, was speaking to someone a expert in the industry - and these had never been looked at...
We also had some time to wonder round the Kirkby Moor sie of the big pit. I noticed something very strange as well: from across the quarry I could hear some explosion like noises, even though it wasn't working at the time. I'm almost sure that the noise was coming from a water pump of some kind, which could just be seen spilling water into a tunnel?
If my theory is right, then this must be the way in which Burliington dispose of their water.
