Aditnow is a fantastic site, however it's getting a bit cluttered with mine entries. This makes me less inclined to fight my way through it and put some pictures up.

It needs more focus.

Why is it listed as Crofty South and not as South Crofty as it should be?. I agree with stuey's comments regarding clutter 100%

Thank you Ian :)

I don't think this problem was a case of any suddenly a duplicate South Crofty being added. I suspect it had been there for a while. Some folk do add mines before checking they are already in the database and in this case it looks like a duplicate Carnkie added.

Recently a Regional Editor called Pickwick has been doing an enormous amount of work making mine names in the SW region consistent and changing UPPERCASE names to Title Case. He has made a huge difference

In doing so it is possible some existing duplicates (i.e. not added by Pickwick, but added by somebody else ages ago) have come to our attention because they show in the latest updated mines list.

It is worth noting that a small number of people, and Pickwick and ICLOK spring to mind as by far the most active current editors spend a lot of time maintaining the database.

By no means am I suggesting it's perfect. It's probably far from perfect. Far, far from perfect even.

But it's all volunteer driven and if you see a mistake, please don't write the database off because of it. Let somebody know via the forum!

There's a dedicated forum for mistakes here: http://www.aditnow.co.uk/community/viewforum.aspx?f=20

Or post it up in the regional forum for the area it relates to.

A regional editor or an admin will then pick it up!

There are tools for editing and deleting mines and for moving photographs between albums in the same mine or to an album in a different mine.

ICLOK showed us how easy it is to correct a mistake there!

Feel free to post them up. If they're not posted up then many of them may never be corrected.

I don't think he's visited the site for about a year.

I think we lost a bit of focus through the addition of lots of additional categories and classifications. Possibly a case of me trying to keep everybody happy. Never possible!

I think it's pretty well focussed on mines and quarries with a sprinkling of relevant surface infrastructure now though?

Any ideas for getting it more focussed on the subject matter are very welcome. I'd hate to think that after 5 years work on the site it had lost it's way and people were put off uploading photos etc.

I am very sorry but a lot of the nonsense such as "Crofty South" and irritating capitalisation of mine names was imported with a database of mines origin unknown which came into my possession. What’s worse is that I could have written a VBA script to parse every entry automatically correcting a lot of this before I forwarded it to Simon, thereby saving other people a lot of work.

My apologies again.

Dont worry, Pickwick and I are sorting the DB now adding the Wheal too.... Sick of debating this now after 3 years when basically not dared to do it one way or the other, so now typically format will be 'East Wheal Rose', 'North Tincroft' etc, it will be an ongoing task but we will get there. The idea being if we put the words in the right order we will get some consistency, then we can add the Wheal at our leisure.... this should make it dead easy to spot duplications and ultimately correct the DB. Regards ICLOK 🙂

EDIT lots of wheals added and doing another sweep tonight of re-arranging the words to read correctly

Roy - no worries at all! It was yours and Roy Morton's data that kick started the SW region :flowers:

ICLOK - thanks. Glad you and Pickwick are in contact. And good to hear it's getting fixed.

Every day I suspect the data gets better.

But anybody with worries, please instead of grumbling privately about it, please it up. There are splendid people working on it as we speak :flowers:

We'll get there but gonna need some help so you Cornish lads best be ready for a few queries... as a certain guy on here says ..... Gedon!!!

Ahem!
The original SW database was passed on to me as an unfinished project by a friend who asked if I could complete the task. The project had been scrambled by an early OCR program which completely hashed the whole thing up and the original text file had been erased.
The database was, at this stage, about 65% complete entry wise with the remaining 35% to be added; this was made up from my own personal DB which itself was 5 years in the making.
It took me 3 years to complete and unravell the file corruptions that were inherent in most of the entries bringing the DB up to an almost ready for publication condition and was not meant to be forwarded anywhere else untill it was in a complete and thoroughly de bugged format, a task I was part way through when it appeared on here.
Well - that's history now and Nuff said.....But do remember where it originated thanks.

Moving on - I see that we now have two Wheal Enys Mines in the DB.

Why people can't check first just baffles me. If AN is to maintain its high standard then all people submitting info need to check and double check to stop the 'duplicate entry hell' that is being created.

AN is INMHO, the best mining site anywhere on the net and is loyal to the subject rather than rambling off into green-laning Land Rovers and having sections of the site cordoned off to users who do not have the required number of brownie points.
Anyway Guys Power to your elbows and, as they used to say in Private Eye, 'May your Organ Swell'

Supplimental - Wheal Enys now has the one entry plus an extra photo from my collection. 😉

Hi Roy
I suspected some OCR way back along the line, you explain a lot.
You will also see that you have credit (alongside me) for the entries.

Now I have been thinking about alternative names.
Obviously I am aware that regional editors can move material and then delete a duplicate entry so this is just for consideration. I was wondering if an another way would be to enter alternative names with a reference to the 'best known as' name and then use a new funtionality to lock the alternative name mine so as to prevent uploads etc.

I dont know what people think of this, many may well prefer to leave as is, but someone looking for a mine which they only know under the alternative name could be confused to the point where they add the mine again under the alternative.

If you can follow all this!

Well thats a sweep of OS sheet SW done ... ALL mines on that sheet should be reading for example

East xxxxx United OR Great Wheal xxxxxxx OR etc etc

I have added wheal were known and I will come back to check more.... So for sheet SW you can now read the names correctly with or without the Wheal

Now to get on with SX..... :bored:

One thing I can't do, is select a sheet, then when I click show mines with contents, there is a glitch in the matrix. I am then confronted by the mother of all lists of empty holes.

In my mind, it is paramount to have a list of holes and then button which enables the armchair explorer to peruse holes with added info/photos.

Unless I am totally inept in operating the interwebz. 🙂

It's on the list. As is a complete re-write of mine searching. 😉

I am just terrifyingly busy with paying work at the moment :(

Be assured that anything uploaded (docs, images etc.) will transfer seamlessly when I write the new mine search front end. So please don't be put off using the site, and that there will be functional improvements as 2011 progresses 🙂
